Overview

Designed specifically for one-semester intermediate French courses, SUR LE VIF offers a contextualized review of the fundamentals, adding just enough new material to expand the language skills of students without overwhelming them. The textbook is divided into an in-class conversation manual and an out-of-class grammar reference, giving instructors the flexibility to choose among readings, activities, and grammar practice to meet the varied needs of intermediate students. In nine short chapters, SUR LE VIF encompasses a full-length intermediate course with its provocative readings, active grammar review, and updated cultural notes. The program also takes into account the importance of audio and visual elements: the "Prélude" (before Chapter 1), two "Interludes" (after Chapters 3 and 6), and "Postlude" (after Chapter 9) contain new songs and follow-up activities. The accompanying video program, featured on the new Premium Website, adds a visual component. By skillfully weaving grammar review into thought-provoking chapter themes, SUR LE VIF provides a solid review of first-year French while adding refinements for improved skills in reading, listening, composition, and conversation.

  • New vibrant full color design, bringing a whole new meaning to the expression, SUR LE VIF!
  • New and updated readings, songs, and cultural material encourage deeper exploration of chapter themes, as well as lively discussions about cross-cultural comparisons.
  • More consistent use of the "Rappel" boxes, a careful evaluation of grammar explanations, and additional "Cherchez la forme" activities add to the clarity and accuracy of the grammar presentation and review.
  • Combining a more natural progression from basic to open-ended exercises with a more personal application, the Fifth Edition of SUR LE VIF offers more engaging activities that enable students to build on what they already know and express increasingly complex thoughts and ideas in French.
  • New to the SUR LE VIF program, the QUIA™ online Student Activities Manual allows students to complete their homework anywhere, anytime, and instructors the flexibility to manage their courses at their own convenience.
  • The new Premium Website is an online suite of digital resources, making it easy for you to access all the e-Resources available with Sur le vif, 5th edition through this one-stop online portal. You'll have access to all of the resources from the Book Companion Website PLUS premium password-protected content that includes multimedia resources like the SAM audio program, Heinle playlists, grammar podcasts, the complete Sur le vif video program with accompanying exercises, as well as audio-enhanced flash cards. Students gain access to the Premium Web site's content via this printed access card that can be packaged with new copies of the text or online at iChapters.com.
  • Each chapter of SUR LE VIF features two readings: a short selection that contextualizes vocabulary and grammar presentation and practice, and a longer selection that is used as the basis for more communicative, open-ended activities.
  • The second half of SUR LE VIF contains a grammar review in reference format, with explanations in English and examples drawn from chapter themes, facilitating study outside of class and freeing class time for communicative application of the structures to express opinions.
  • All activities, both in-class and at-home, weave together the chapter topic and grammatical structures. For example, a look at French and American systems of higher education in Chapter 1 starts the book on a familiar note and logically demands the review of the present tense.
  • "Hot topics" provoke classroom discussion and encourage spontaneous expression, while presenting a complex picture of the French-speaking world.
  • The songs on the student audio program represent a current and diverse array of musical styles in the Francophone world (chanson, reggae, rap, Cajun, and more) and enhance the cultural richness of the student experience.

"A very interesting and well designed program that has many things to teach our students. The program has many things to offer both in content and process. I like very much the bibliography of readings aimed at informing teachers as well."

"I have found the relationship between the text and the workbook to be one of the most articulated and strongest around. We use the workbook quite a bit, I have found it to be one of the best aspects of Sur le vif. Students have frequently commented on their usefulness and find them to be engaging."

"A succinct, easy to use one-semester book that can be adapted to many types of courses."

"This is an excellent textbook for intermediate French university students. The grammar is well-explained, the vocabulary is well-chosen, the reading are relevant and engaging, and the CD and the workbook reinforce the textbook. PLUS there is MUSIC!!"

"Sur le vif has great supplementary material to help you prepare lesson plans. Readings are followed by comprehension questions and contextualized grammar exercises that ask students to analyze parts of what they read. The book has a strong cultural authenticity which many books lack…"
