Dr. Dixon teaches courses in international relations and American government. These include the Department's introductory International Relations and American Government courses. Dr. Dixon is also on the Curriculum Committee that is responsible for assessment and evaluation of the courses and in his program as well as the University-wide Key Performance Indicator taskforce.
In 2014 he was awarded the USG Regents Teaching Award for Faculty Excellence for UWG. In 2015 he was selected as a Governor's Teaching Fellow, a statewide fellowship that promotes excellence and innovation in teaching practice. He has won teaching and service awards in the College of Social Sciences and was ranked as the #12 highest rated professor in the United States on the professor rating site RateMyProf.com in 2012.
Dr. Dixon is the Associate Director of the Thomas B. Murphy Center for Public Service and has served on numerous committees in various roles in faculty governance. He has a solid sense of the institutional factors that shape administrative demands on classroom teaching.
Dr. Dixon's research is currently focused primarily on the scholarship of teaching and learning. His research focuses on how to maintain the quality and depth of core courses while meeting the demands of assessment and evaluation from accrediting bodies. In the past two years this has focused on early identification of students who are at risk in introductory courses and finding ways to help them to succeed that are practical and sustainable in a realistic teaching environment.
