I'm ending my run as Chemistry department chair at University of San Francisco, having overseen the move to a new science building and upgrading our operating and student research funding. I also run an active research group with BS and MS students doing inorganic and analytical chemistry projects in Nano-sensor technology.
I have a long-standing interest in using technology to help students learn general, analytical and inorganic chemistry having explored or implemented group learning or inquiry-based labs across the curriculum. I've been using OWL for General Chemistry with the Kotz textbook for over 10 years with my fellow faculty. We believe that the mastery approach and visualization of concepts with built-in simulations or tutors allows students to learn chemistry most effectively. The upgrade to OWLv2 is fantastic for students and faculty. Students appreciate the "learn from your mistakes and try again" philosophy for this online learning system.

Supporting the Unprepared Student
Presenters: Larry Margerum, University of San Francisco and Vickie Williamson, Texas A&M University
Many students lack knowledge of key chemistry and mathematical concepts needed to be successful in their courses. With recent school closures and disruptions in learning, students need support now more than ever. Learn about the remediation study tools available within OWLv2, including the Quick Prep and Math Review modules and hear best practices and research from two instructors who have successfully implemented OWLv2 in their courses.
