Karina Sokol

I am a Professor on the Psychology Department at Glendale Community College (GCC) on Glendale, Arizona.  I earned a Ph.D on Developmental Psychology from Arizona State University in 2008.  I have worked with Cengage to develop Investigate Development since 2011 as well as worked on other products that have been integrated with textbooks.

I have been teaching in higher education for 12 years and have been with GCC for 10 years now. I teach a variety of psychology courses including Introduction to Psychology, Statistics, Developmental Psychology, and Biopsychology.  I teach both face-to-face traditional classes, honors classes, and online classes.

I have been using Aplia in my Statistics courses since 2008 and have used Mindtap in both Statistics and Developmental Psychology for a number of years.  I have been integrating the use of Investigate Development and Mastery Training in my developmental psychology courses now for 3 years.  By using these platforms, student understanding, applicability, and critical thinking has markedly increased- as well as their grades! I have conducted research assessing the benefits to students by using these programs compared to other assignments and Mindtap and Aplia lead to better student success.

In developmental psychology, the use of Mastery training to learn key topics and the use of Investigate Development to understand the applicability of developmental psychology have improved overall class grades as well as improved students’ ability to think critically. In statistics, Aplia has been by far the best homework tool helping students to understand why their original answer may be wrong and explaining how to get a correct answer so when they try to problem again they have fully grasped the material and succeed."
