Josh Dyck

I am an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where I teach classes in American Politics, Elections and Public Opinion. I also direct a large scale polling operation for UMass Lowell during statewide and national elections. I hold a doctorate in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland, College Park. I have served as Interim Department Chair, Director of Undergraduate studies and Pi Sigma Alpha Advisor at two large research universities.

I've been teaching Intro to American Politics for over 10 years now, and I have found that technology has forced me to continually adapt to changing expectations and socialization patterns of students. I reviewed some of the very early content for MindTap for American Government and started using a beta version the product in 2015. Web-based reading and assignments have simultaneously increased the depth of knowledge and learning of my students and also decreased student stress around exams. It has freed me from the problem of teaching as a textbook replacement and allowed for classroom lectures, discussions and exercises to be more interactive, fun and involved. Finally, it has allowed me to focus more on helping students develop writing skills in an introductory class, a great improvement over objective test-giving.
