Joe Silverman
I came to teaching relatively late in life, but I have been at it for 18 years. I have worked hard to keep up with the changes, particularly on the technology side. When I first started teaching principles of economics, I decided to create my own PowerPoint lectures, which at that time was slightly cutting edge. At the beginning of my career, online instruction was just coming into existence, so as I started making the transition, I went from learning how to navigate the early platforms (BlackBoard and WebCT) to creating custom content in WebAssign for my statistical methods courses.
Over the years I have taught a variety of subjects in business and economics at every reputable two year community colleges and four year university in San Diego County, in all teaching modalities. I have managed to remain passionate about teaching and plan to keep going for another 9 or so more. Early on I found Cengage reps provided the support that made my job easier. The people at Cengage not only provided me with the usual ancillaries, but also provided me with training and support when it was most needed. This not only made it easier for me to be an effective instructor, but also helped to reduce my stress level.
