Jennifer Frechette
I teach accounting, tax, and excel courses at the community college level. Since 2020, I have been teaching all of my courses asynchronously; however, I taught using a hybrid model for many years before that. I have always been a proponent of digital resources, and I incorporated them into my campus courses long before it was mainstream.
I have been using Cengage products in my asynchronous courses for many years. I constantly ask myself "what if" to keep my courses innovative and engaging. My advanced bookkeeping course incorporates 2 Cengage textbooks into the curriculum; both are seamlessly integrated into D2L Brightspace. I have recently introduced data analytics problems into my excel course, which also requires the use of 2 different textbooks.
The two platforms that I use religiously are MindTap and CNOW2. Since my courses are asynchronous, more than 50% of my course grades are earned through the assignments and assessments that I have created within those platforms. I like the flexibility of question sets, point distribution, and late policy options that I can choose from. In addition to the assignment and assessment options, I utilize the adaptive study plans and student videos that Cengage provides (and have modified each of those to accommodate my wants and needs as an instructor).
My students have provided positive feedback about the organization of my courses, the format of the assignments, and the immediate feedback that they have received from myself and Cengage (through the “check my work” and “ask my professor” options that I make available to them).
