The Wadsworth College Reading Series, Third Edition is a three-level series that uses a progressive, unified approach to improving students' reading comprehension and critical thinking skills--and all at an affordable price! Praised in the second edition by users across the country, the third edition of this innovative series contains additional features and support materials that will enhance students' abilities to become effective readers. This series follows a consistent sequence and structure, pairing skills and strategies with paragraphs and short selections to introduce new concepts in context. The readings represent a diverse range of sources, including textbooks, websites, and magazines. The readings in the Third Edition have been updated for currency and relevance to students' interest, and have been reviewed carefully to ensure appropriate instructional level reading. The Wadsworth College Reading Series Book 1 , 3/e is the first book in a three-level series and is designed for low -level (5th to 8th grade) reading courses. The third edition was revised by Edith (Edy) Alderson, Joliet Junior College Professor Emeritus. After earning degrees in education from Illinois State University and reading from Northern Illinois University, Alderson spent over thirty years teaching reading. More than twenty years were devoted to teaching developmental reading at Joliet Junior College where she also served as Coordinator for Developmental Reading.

  • Longer Reading Selections: Students and instructors now have a choice of three longer reading selections in chapters 2-8. These choices allow students more practice reading longer pieces as well as a greater diversity of material to read.
  • Longer Reading Selections from Career Area Textbooks: At least one of the longer reading selections in chapters 2-8 has been selected from career area textbooks such as fire science, law enforcement, computer technology, and sports medicine. Many students taking developmental reading courses today will pursue degrees in the career areas. These readings allow them to experience the actual textbook material from a career they may be considering. For students who are undecided in their career choice, these readings may inspire them to investigate a particular career.
  • Longer Biographical Reading Selections: At least one of the longer reading selections in chapters 2-8 is of biographical content. These biographies are selected to represent the great diversity of people that students may very well read about in their college courses and during their careers.
  • Streamlined Skill Explanations: Skill explanations have been streamlined for greater ease of comprehension.
  • Updated Practice Materials: New updated practice materials have been largely selected from career area textbooks. Students have authentic college text materials on which to practice their reading skills. These high interest materials have been carefully chosen to be at students' instructional reading level.
  • Reorganized Chapter Materials: The reading strategy has been moved ahead of the reading selections. Students are encouraged to practice the chapter reading strategy on their choice of reading selections. Because there are multiple reading selections, students could possibly practice the strategy several times. The chapter review has been moved to the end of the chapter. While most questions follow the cloze procedure format, questions in later chapters in the text require more thoroughly written answers.
  • Chapter Tests Are Now In The Instructor's Manual: Chapter tests have been removed from the textbook. This allows for greater security and validity for administering chapter assessments. The Combined Skills Tests for comprehensive assessment at the end of the textbook have also been removed for security and validity of results. All the tests are available in the Instructor's Manual and online.
  • Web Links: Web links have been added to allow students additional instruction and the interactive links will provide them with the opportunity for additional practice.
  • Chapter Goals: Chapter goals are clearly stated so students know what they will learn when the chapter is completed--encouraging students to take charge of their learning.
  • Integration of Skills and Strategies: Along with presenting the major reading skills--identifying the main idea, supporting details, implied main idea, transitions, patterns of organization, and others--the book introduces students to a world of reading strategies that will enable them to practice good habits while reading. Strategies such as SQ3R, annotating, and note taking will help students improve their comprehension of what they read and will enable them to learn different strategies that will help them comprehend and analyze what they read.
  • Consistent Chapter Structure: Each chapter covers skills and strategies in a consistent and clear manner.
  • Coverage of Visuals: An entire chapter is devoted to the instruction and review of visual materials students will need to comprehend various college textbooks.
  • Critical Thinking: In addition to a multitude of skills exercises designed to help students build comprehension, the text features questions at the end of the reading selections that build on important critical thinking skills. Many practice exercises, too, require the application of critical thinking.
  • Vocabulary Strategy Building: Every chapter covers a particular vocabulary strategy and relates that strategy to reading selections from the chapters.
  • Focus on Academic Achievement: Tips and selected readings about studying and succeeding in school are integrated throughout the text.
  • Pretest: These pretests, which appear in Chapters 2 through 8, assess the student's knowledge of the skill to be introduced. This assessment helps both instructors and students target specific areas for improvement.
  • Explanation: Each chapter is broken up into sections, with each section devoted to explanation and practice of a particular concept. Material is divided into manageable sections of information that are followed by practice of a specific skill.
  • Exercises: An ample number and variety of exercises is included in every chapter. Most of the exercises contain paragraphs from textbooks, magazines, newspapers, and journals so that students can read various types of selections and learn new information about a variety of different subjects. Exercises are arranged using a step-by-step progression to build concepts and skills gradually.
  • Reading Strategy: Every chapter includes an important reading strategy that students can use to help them comprehend and remember what they've read. Students are encouraged to practice the strategy on the longer reading selections included in each chapter.
  • Chapter Review: A closing exercise tests students' knowledge of the concepts presented at the end of each chapter.
  • Longer Reading Selections: Longer reading selections that follow the explanatory material are included to give students practice in identifying different skills in context. Readings are chosen for their high interest, diverse topics, and cultural relevance for today's students. In addition, each reading is selected with the level of student in mind as well as students' ethnic, cultural, and educational experiences.
  • Questions for Discussion and Writing: These questions ask students to think about their own experiences, as well as what they have read in the longer reading selections. The main points, topics, and theses of the longer readings are used as springboards to encourage student reflection on personal experiences and as stimuli for strengthening academic skills such as research, argument, and summary. These questions give students the opportunity to develop their writing skills by responding to a professional reading selection.
  • Vocabulary: Vocabulary is integrated in several different ways throughout each chapter. First, definitions of words or phrases that may be new to beginning students appear as footnotes. In addition, words that may be unfamiliar are taken from the longer reading selections that appear later in Chapters 1 through 8 and used in a vocabulary exercise that follows the selection. Students are given the opportunity to glean the meanings of certain words from context and expand their overall vocabulary. Lastly, each chapter includes instruction in a specific vocabulary strategy, such as context clues, that will help students improve their reading comprehension. The instruction is followed by one or more exercises that draw examples from readings in the text to give students practice with that particular strategy.
