Overview

RESEARCH STRATEGIES FOR A DIGITAL AGE, 5th Edition, is a step-by-step guide that helps students increase their knowledge as they develop invaluable research skills. This product blends traditional research methods with instruction on how to use and evaluate electronic research technologies. It equips students with research and documentation skills critical to today's online environment. The introduction to research begins in the academic library: Using online discovery tools in a controlled environment enables students to develop research and analytical skills before they expand their search to the Web.

Bonnie Tensen, Augsburg College

Bonnie Tensen has taught college composition for over 20 years, first in the traditional classroom, then in networked classroom environments and online. For 15 years she taught composition and literature courses online at Seminole State College of Florida. In Fall of 2013, Bonnie began serving as an e-learning specialist at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, assisting in the conversion of their weekend and evening college courses from f2f to hybrid. Although she is well acquainted with its pedagogical and personal challenges, she has become a vocal proponent of the powerful educational experiences e-learning -- when designed well -- can offer today's generation of students. A popular speaker, she has presented her unique approach at many conferences and led numerous seminars on incorporating the Internet in the classroom.

MindTap® is the digital learning solution that powers students from memorization to mastery. It gives you complete control of your course—to provide engaging content, to challenge every individual, and to build their confidence. Empower students to accelerate their progress with MindTap.

  • Part 3, "Incorporating Your Research," supplies a comprehensive clarification of the different forms plagiarism may take and provides strategies for incorporating and documenting direct quotation and paraphrase skillfully and correctly.
  • A revised Chapter 8 explains and thoroughly illustrates the new system of documentation adopted by the Modern Language Association in the MLA Handbook, 8th Edition.
  • Part 4, "Research Documentation," contains the latest citation guidelines along with sample research papers and numerous models, including several new models for Web publications. The sample student papers illustrate the use of proper documentation for a variety of sources, providing concrete and realistic examples to help students learn and correctly apply their research skills.
  • "E-Tip" boxes provide strategies for using digital technologies (word processing, Web tools, library resources) more efficiently. Website screenshots and examples provide students with the most up-to-date technological information available.
  • This versatile text incorporates fundamental traditional research skills and specific instruction on finding and evaluating current Web sources, giving students both the core skills and specialized knowledge they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
  • The text introduces students to digital search tools and strategies in the academic library, a controlled environment with credible, vetted sources. This ensures students develop the analytical skills necessary for locating and assessing sources before expanding their inquiries to the Web.
  • Chapters 2 and 3 have been entirely revamped to address significant changes in online library search tools and help students differentiate between (and understand the benefits of) using library discovery tools rather than "googling."
  • A completely revised Chapter 4, "How to Surf the Web without Drowning," helps students to conduct effective online research using the latest tools and technologies, such as Google Scholar.
