HEATING WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY shows how to merge renewable heat sources, such as solar thermal collectors, hydronic heat pumps, and wood-fired boilers, with the latest hydronics hardware and low temperature distribution systems to assemble economically sustainable heating systems. Detailed descriptions, examples, and illustrations begin with basic building blocks and conclude with complete system designs that show the synergy of detail and function possible with state-of-the-art hardware and design methods. Modeled after the author's highly successful MODERN HYDRONIC HEATING, this practical book focuses on realistic solutions and demonstrates the commonality of renewable energy system design, regardless of heat source.

John Siegenthaler, Associate Professor Emeritus, Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica, NY

John Siegenthaler, P.E., is a mechanical engineering graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a licensed professional engineer, and Professor Emeritus of Engineering Technology at Mohawk Valley Community College. "Siggy", as he is known in the industry, has over 32 of experience in designing modern hydronic heating systems, including those using renewable energy subsystems. He is a hall-of-fame member of the Radiant Panel Association, and a presenter at national and international conferences on heating and building technology. John is principal of Appropriate Designs, a consulting engineering firm in Holland Patent, NY.
  • Demonstrates that modern hydronics technology is the "glue" that holds together nearly all thermally based renewable energy systems.
  • Focuses on details rather than just concepts to provide readers with the nuts & bolts information required for real solutions.
  • Includes extensive full color illustrations that provide detailed piping and control schematics, as well as reference information that designers will use on every system.
  • Uses standard English measurement units exclusively, guaranteeing consistency with today's US industry practices.
  • Provides mathematical design tools, along with complete examples of how they are used, to help designers learn to analyze variations in system design and make informed decisions long before any hardware gets assembled.
  • Shows the common design elements of systems with different renewable energy heat sources to help designers learn how to migrate details and subsystems among systems using different renewable energy heat sources.
  • Starts with "building blocks" and finishes with complete system designs to ensure that designers aren't left wondering how common hardware operates or how to select it.
  • Covers a wide range of renewable energy heat sources for space heating and domestic hot water, allowing readers to diversify their expertise.
  • Includes a downloadable academic version of author-developed software that assists with the design calculations and procedures presented in the book.
