HEALTH, SAFETY, AND NUTRITION FOR THE YOUNG CHILD, 9th Edition, covers contemporary health, safety, and nutrition needs of infant through school-age children--and guides teachers in implementing effective classroom practices--in one comprehensive, full-color volume. Concepts are backed by the latest research findings and linked to NAEYC standards. The text emphasizes the importance of respecting and partnering with families to help children establish healthy lifestyles and achieve their learning potential. Early childhood educators, professionals, and families will find the latest research and information on many topics of significant concern, including food safety, emergency and disaster preparedness, childhood obesity, children's mental health, bullying, resilience, chronic and acute health conditions, environmental quality, and children with special medical needs. Also provided are easy-to-access checklists, guidelines, activities, and lesson plans that no early childhood student or professional should be without.

Lynn R. Marotz, University of Kansas, professor emerita

Lynn R. Marotz, R.N., professor emerita, was a member of the Department of Applied Behavioral Science faculty, University of Kansas, for over thirty-five years and also served as the Associate Director of the Child Development Center. She taught large undergraduate and graduate courses in parenting, children's health, safety and nutrition, history and philosophy of early childhood education, and leadership and administration. She worked closely with students in the Early Childhood teacher education program and the families of children enrolled in the Child Development Center. Professor Marotz has authored numerous invited book chapters in national and international publications about children's health and nutrition, legal issues, and environmental safety. She is also the author of HEALTH, SAFETY, AND NUTRITION FOR THE YOUNG CHILD, DEVELOPMENTAL PROFILES: BIRTH THROUGH ADOLESCENCE, MOTIVATIONAL LEADERSHIP, and BY THE AGES: BEHAVIOR AND DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN PRE-BIRTH THROUGH EIGHT. She has been interviewed for numerous articles about children's health and nutrition and parenting that have appeared in national trade magazines, has served as a consultant for children's museums and training film productions, has presented extensively at international, national, and state conferences, and continues to hold appointments on national, state, and local committees and initiatives that advocate on behalf of children and their families.
  • New Learning Objectives correlated to the main sections in each chapter show students what they need to know to process and understand the information in the chapter. After completing the chapter, students should be able to demonstrate how they can use and apply their new knowledge and skills.
  • New Digital Downloads of the complete Teacher Checklists presented in the textbook are available for students to download, customize, and use in the classroom. An icon identifies the downloadable checklists throughout the text.
  • New Did You Get It? quizzes allow students to measure their performance against the learning objectives in each chapter. One question for each learning objective is featured in the textbook to encourage students to go to, take the full quiz, and check their understanding.
  • Several chapters have been rewritten, reorganized, and expanded to improve student learning. A new section, "Emergency and Disaster Preparedness," has been added to Chapter 8. Former Chapters 14 and 15 have been combined into a new Chapter 14, "Nutrients That Promote Growth and Regulate Body Functions (Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals, and Water)." Technical detail has been replaced with material that is easier for students to understand. Chapter 18, "Food Safety", has been reorganized and new information added to draw attention to a serious health concern.
  • A New Teach Source Video Connections feature introduces students to short video clips filmed in actual classrooms and available for viewing at Early Childhood Education CourseMate. Each video illustrates important chapter content and includes questions that can be used for self-reflection and/or group discussion. The videos are also appropriate to use for professional in-service training.
  • A new Partnering with Families feature addresses the importance of family involvement and inclusion in children's health, safety, and nutrition education. Information on a variety of topics is provided in letter format for busy teachers to copy and send home or share with families in a newsletter, program handbook, website posting, parent conference, or bulletin board display.
  • A new Connecting to Everyday Practice feature presents real-life situations that challenge students to resolve common dilemmas by applying chapter content. Thought-provoking questions encourage self-reflection and/or group discussion.
  • A new Did You Know. . . ? feature in the margins offers interesting facts to increase student curiosity and interest in chapter content.
  • Teacher Checklists--a well-received feature that has been expanded in every chapter--provide quick, efficient access to critical information and best practices. Beginning practitioners will find these concise reference lists especially helpful in learning new material. Experienced teachers and administrators will appreciate their easy access for classroom use and staff training purposes.
  • An extensive, updated collection of children's books that can be used for teaching about health, safety, and nutrition while also encouraging literacy skills appears in Appendix D. It includes titles that address topics such as dental health, mental health, self-care, safety, nutrition, special needs, and physical activity.
  • Relevant National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Professional Preparation Standards are identified at the onset of each chapter, enabling students to relate chapter content to the association's professional education framework.
