Best-selling CHILD, FAMILY, SCHOOL, COMMUNITY: SOCIALIZATION AND SUPPORT introduces socialization using a powerful conceptual framework -- Urie Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological Model of Human Development. Examining how the school, family, and community influence children's socialization, this resource addresses complex issues in a clear, comprehensive fashion. Students appreciate the narrative drive, timely examples, and effective pedagogy. Presentation of diversity issues includes matters related to culture, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and special needs. The tenth edition emphasizes NAEYC and NASW standards and presents new neuroscience-based material.

  • This popular, proven text uses Urie Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological Model of Human Development as a framework to illustrate and examine how school, family, peers, and community influence children's socialization. The model is introduced in Chapter 1 and integrated throughout subsequent chapters.
  • After the introduction of the bioecological theory of human development and child socialization processes (aims, agents, methods, outcomes), the book discusses each socialization context in which the child develops, and concludes with child socialization outcomes.
  • Excellent graphics include the Bronfenbrenner concentric circle model highlighted according to relevant chapter topics.
  • Featured at the start of every chapter, “Socialization Sketches” spotlight popular icons who have socialization histories relevant to the chapter focus and topics. The author examines the socialization histories of Oprah Winfrey, Urie Bronfenbrenner (NEW), Prince William (NEW), Dr. Benjamin Spock, Shakira (NEW), Laura Bush (NEW), Amy Tan, Kareem Abdul Jabbar (NEW), Francis Ford Coppola, Ralph Nader, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Wilma Mankiller (NEW).
  • Illustrating concepts in action, “In Practice” boxes show teachers and child care workers how to infuse their practice with the concepts and theories being discussed as well as how these concepts play out in the real world. Other boxed content presents examples related to the chapter discussion, offering additional real-world insight.
  • Aids to student learning include critical thinking questions, socialization sketches, examples, boxes (In Context, In Practice, Dimensions of Diversity, Brain Briefs), figures, tables, photos, activities, and a clear and concise writing style.
  • The author provides questions, aligned with each major heading, to motivate student learning.
  • The most comprehensive, original, and researched-based text in the child socialization market, this book offers thorough coverage that examines all influences on children's socialization, including parenting, family, school, community, the media, peer groups, teachers, and non-parental child care. Depth of coverage includes relevant classic and contemporary research.
