Cengage Learning Rights and Permissions Overview

You may submit requests for permission to reuse Cengage Learning copyrighted material via the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC). Cengage Learning has licensed the CCC to grant permission on its behalf in real time. Titles not eligible for a real-time grant may still be submitted through the Copyright Clearance Center as a "Special Order" to be reviewed by Cengage Learning on a case by case basis which may take 5-15 business days.

You may submit a request through our Cengage Learning online request form if the title you are seeking does not appear on the Copyright Clearance Center. Please allow 5-15 business days for processing.

Please check the Association of American Publishers to avoid sending Cengage Learning another publisher’s title.

Troubleshooting

We recommend using Internet Explorer (IE) when submitting an online request. If you are already using IE, try deleting your cache, clearing your cookies, and restarting your browser. The use of your browser’s back button also can cause errors. Instead, if you want to correct or change information, go to the end of the form. There you can return to the previous sections by selecting the "Modify this information” link. If that doesn’t work, call 800-730-2214 or e-mail us.

Enter the ISBN into the section "Find ISBN" search option without any dashes or spaces. Do not include the 10 or 13 that precedes the ISBN. If the ISBN is still not found, double check that the title is a Cengage Learning product. If you are certain that the title is owned by Cengage Learning, enter the ISBN and all corresponding title information.

Note: A search of online bookseller websites or the U.S. Copyright Office's online catalog may help determine if Cengage Learning is the correct publisher.

If the product you are searching for cannot be located or does not have an ISBN, enter the information manually. If you are seeking permission to use material from a website or an online database, enter "N/A" in the ISBN field and the URL of the website or name of the database in the Title field. If you are unsure of what to enter in the mandatory fields, enter "N/A" and provide an explanation in the "Detailed description of material requested" field.

Submit an online request by entering as much information as possible into the form. For any of the mandatory fields that you feel are not applicable, enter "N/A." There will be an opportunity to provide us with more information about your request in the “Detailed description of the material requested” box in the form.

If after completing the form you feel that additional information or documentation is needed to explain your use, respond to your confirmation e-mail and include that information.

Provide as much detail as possible in the "Detailed description of material requested" box. Once the request has been submitted, send us a copy of the material by responding to the confirmation e-mail or via fax 800-730-2214. Write your Request ID number on the top of each page. We will look through the textbook to find your page range and /or figure numbers.

Provide as much information as possible, and we will determine if a permission letter can be issued. If more information is required, we will contact you.

Your Request ID was provided on the last page of the request form. The Request ID was also included in a confirmation e-mail. If you did not receive a Request ID, resend your request. If you have a Request ID but did not receive a confirmation e-mail, contact us via our e-mail form.

Frequently Asked Questions

Permission Requests

Permission is authorization to make a copy (printed or electronic) of material that is protected by copyright. Examples of copying for which permission is required include photocopying or republishing printed works, duplicating electronic products, posting material to a web page and transmitting or broadcasting via cable or satellite.

For content protected by copyright, permission from the copyright holder is required for to make and distribute copies, unless a statutory exception like "fair use" applies.

U.S. copyright law may permit you to use small portions of our copyrighted content without our permission or a fee as a "fair use." You must make your own fair use determination. However, because every fair use decision requires you to conduct an analysis of the content and the use, we have attempted to eliminate the uncertainty by defining certain no-fee (gratis) uses. Our no-fee license is not an attempt by us to establish what is and what is not fair use, but provides some guidance about how we think about fair use.

To request permission to photocopy, duplicate, republish, or otherwise use Cengage Learning material, fill out the online permission request form.

Permission granted is only a license to replicate a legally obtained copy of the material. Cengage Learning does not provide electronic copies of our material for the purpose of duplication.

Visit CengageBrain for purchase options. You may also obtain material at your local library or via another retailer.

In general, we do not grant permission to photocopy or reprint more than 10% of an in-print publication. You may get permission to copy greater percentages of out-of-print titles.

Note: Many in-print titles are available for purchase in an electronic format at www.cengagebrain.com.

If a portion of the material has a "credit line" that names a person or business other than Cengage Learning, obtain rights directly from that person or business for that portion. The credit line is located on the same page as the material itself or in the credits section (usually in the back or front of the book). Obtaining permission from Cengage Learning does not include permission to use third-party material, which must be removed unless separate permission from the copyright owner is obtained.

Consult the copyright notice in the book or other work. If you have a photocopy that does not contain a copyright notice, the U.S. Copyright Office maintains records of registered works by author and title.

The more complete your request, the faster we will be able to process it. We strive for a 5-15 business day turnaround, but the time frame may be longer during the peak seasons.

If you used the same material in previous semesters or publications, include the prior Request ID in your new request, either in the “Your reference #” field or the “Detailed description of material requested” text box. If you have an immediate deadline, contact us via your request confirmation e-mail. We will make every effort to accommodate your deadline.

To inquire about requests submitted or for further information about accessible product, contact us via our e-mail form, phone +1 800.730.2214 or fax +1 800.730.2215.

For course pack use, payment is due within 60 days from the start of the semester. For any other use, payment is due within 60 days of the issue date.

Your fee is located in the "total due" section of your permission letter. If you do not have a "total due" section, permission has been granted without charge (gratis). If you believe that the gratis grant was in error, contact us via our e-mail form or phone +1 800.730.2214.

Cengage Learning does not provide receipts for permission-related transactions. However, if a receipt is required for expense reporting, we will send you a copy of your permission letter stamped “paid.” Contact us via our e-mail form or phone +1 800.730.2214, if this is something you require.

We cannot grant permission if we do not hold the rights to the material or the title. We may not grant permission if the amount of material requested exceeds 10% of an in-print publication. We may choose not to grant permission for other reasons as well. See the bottom of your denial letter for an explanation of why your request was denied. If you believe your request has been denied in error, contact us via our e-mail form or phone +1 800.730.2214.

Many in-print titles are available online in print or electronic form, either by the chapter or the book. Check for the title you want at CengageBrain.
