Larry J. Siegel, University of Massachusetts, Lowell, Emeritus

Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the criminal justice program at the State University of New York at Albany, earning his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University and has also held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska–Omaha, Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire and in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts–Lowell (UML). Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach courses on Criminology and Criminal Justice in UML'S online master's degree program. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, corrections, criminal justice and criminal procedure. He is a court certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

Clemens Bartollas, University of Northern Iowa

Clem Bartollas is a professor of Sociology at the University of Northern Iowa. He holds a B.A. from Davis and Elkins College, a B.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary, an S.T.M. from San Francisco Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in sociology with a special emphasis in criminology from The Ohio State University. He has taught at Pembroke State University, Sangamon State University, and the University of Northern Iowa, where he has received a number of honors, including Distinguished Scholar, the Donald McKay Research Award, and the Regents' Award for Faculty Excellence. Dr. Bartollas is the author of numerous articles and more than 30 texts.
  • An all-new Chapter 15, "Today's Corrections Professional: Characteristics, Challenges, and Opportunities," discusses why a career in corrections is beneficial and outlines the variety of career paths in the field--providing information about the nature of the jobs, qualifications and required education, job outlook, earnings, benefits, and more. Students learn what it is like to work in corrections, including some of the challenges that face working professionals today. The chapter also discusses the importance of internships in corrections.
  • A new emphasis on critical thinking is evident in new "Critical Thinking" questions and "For Group Discussion" activities that appear in the text margins where related concepts are discussed. For instance, one group activity has students work together to create an offender profile using a needs assessment instrument and then discuss programs that could rehabilitate the offender. In addition, all of the book's "Techno-Corrections" and "Evidence-Based Corrections" include new "For Critical Thinking and Writing" assignments.
  • New "Web App" features in each chapter encourage students to research corrections-related topics online and think critically about them. For example, one asks students to visit the Prison Studies Project website to learn more about Bedford Hills College at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility--a case study discussed throughout Chapter 8--and consider how educational programs in prisons reduce recidivism rates.
  • New learning tools include a "Preview of Key Concepts" at the beginning of each chapter. In addition, the timelines in each part have been expanded to include more detail as well as more historical photographs and images.
  • The book's "Exhibits" are updated with new case studies and real-world examples of corrections programming, correctional policies "in action," and success stories. For example, a new "Exhibit" in Chapter 4 features Curt's Café, a non-profit restaurant that hires at-risk young adults--particularly those with criminal records--and provides them with job training and work experience, an example of a successful restorative justice program. Other new "Exhibits" include a case study of an offender going through the classification process (Ch. 7) and a parole success story (Ch. 11).
  • Provocative "Myth/Fact" boxes present popular myths (i.e., "prison rehabilitation efforts are a failure") followed by a fact that has been supported by research in the field, and are designed to generate lively discussion and debate in the classroom.
  • Gripping, current, high-profile cases are the subject of the text's real-life chapter opening vignettes, which capture student interest and encourage reading. Chapter 5, for instance, describes a 2013 case at the Baltimore jail where several corrections officers were indicted for assisting Tayon White--an inmate in the Baltimore jail and a member of the Black Guerilla Family (BGF) prison gang--in running a lucrative drug operation behind bars.
  • "TechnoCorrections" boxes provide comprehensive information about the latest technologies in corrections. Topics include a New Jersey pilot project concerning round-the-clock Global Positioning System (GPS) monitoring for the state's most dangerous registered sex offenders; and possible future technologies, such as scanning devices that can help detect illegal contraband, devices that use radio waves to track prisoner and staff movements, and computer programs that may help predict where problems are most likely to occur within correctional institutions.
  • Careers in corrections are highlighted in every chapter with such features as "Voices Across the Profession," which includes interviews of working professionals; "Careers in Corrections" boxes that spotlight real corrections professionals; and "Thinking Like a Corrections Professional" activities that challenge students to think critically and problem solve about dilemmas they are likely to face on the job.
  • "Correctional Life" inserts give students a firsthand glimpse of what it is like "inside" prisons of the past or the present. The settings examined include, among others, the historic Eastern State Penitentiary and today's supermax prisons. Topics include an average day in the life of a probation officer, the challenge of an inmate preparing his or her case for appeal, the perspective of an inmate who has been sexually victimized, a prison captain's challenges in overseeing prison security, and a female correctional officer's experiences working in a male prison.
