Overview

¡A QUE SÍ! is a provocative post-intermediate Spanish conversation book designed to increase students' awareness of Hispanic culture. The text encourages critical thinking while challenging the students' ability to express themselves in Spanish, by providing them with an opportunity for in-depth exploration of relevant contemporary issues. The Fourth Edition presents four main themes around which all the text and supplemental materials revolve: Espacios: Públicos y privados, Encuentros y desencuentros, Patria/Nación: Acercamientos, and De acá para allá. Each thematic unit is supported by creative activities and engaging authentic materials. Both Spain and Latin American countries are represented, as are male and female writers, and a few of the different ethnic groups that comprise Hispanic culture.

M. Victoria García Serrano, University of Pennsylvania

Mª Victoria García Serrano (Conquista de la Sierra, Spain) studied Hispanic Philology-Linguistics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She received her PhD in Contemporary Latin American Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her areas of research are literary theory and writing by Hispanic women authors.

Cristina de la Torre, Emory University

Cristina de la Torre was born in Cuba and moved to the United States as a child. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, Florida, and her Ph.D. in Spanish from Emory University. She spent several years in Madrid, Spain, where she was inspired to begin her dual career as professor of Spanish and literary translator.

Annette Grant Cash, Georgia State University

Annette Grant Cash teaches Spanish at Georgia State University where she is also the Director of the Translation and Interpretation Program. Her BA and MA degrees are in Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her PhD is in Romance Linguistics from The Ohio State University.
  • Every chapter of the Fourth Edition is supported by iLrnAdvance, a system of web-based activities which address the needs of students in advanced-level language courses. This system features auto-graded exercises and speaking and writing activities, which are adapted from the Cuaderno. It also offers access to grammar tutorials and podcasts, vocabulary and grammar quizzes, and a variety of games. Instructors will have course management capabilities for grading and assigning work as well as access to syllabi. Instructors and students alike will benefit from the "Share it!" feature, which allows for uploading, sharing, and commenting on files.
  • All reading materials as well as the corresponding activities have been thoroughly revised, restructured, and updated. The new readings touch on current topics or offer new perspectives on traditional ones.
  • The Audio Program, designed for the development of listening comprehension skills, now contains twelve highly contextualized listening selections that have been integrated into the textbook.
  • To end every lesson there is a new section called Tu (video) blog which prompts students to report on their real or imagined experiences in the Spanish-speaking world.
  • The Fourth Edition suggests one film at the end of every chapter for optional viewing. This section provides activities to be done before, during, and after viewing the movie. The films expose students to authentic cultural situations while developing their language skills.
  • Each reading is accompanied by pre-reading and post-reading activities, which help students to think and speak critically about the issues presented.
  • The readings in ¡A QUE SÍ! have been chosen from a wide variety of sources: literature, newspapers, magazines, comic strips, advertisements, songs, blogs, and films. Both Spain and many Latin American countries are represented, as are male and female writers, and a few of the different ethnic groups that comprise Hispanic culture. The strong human interest component of the reading helps foster lively exchanges and a stimulating classroom environment.
  • The Cuaderno contains grammatical explanations as well as exercises for vocabulary, grammar, and writing review.
  • References to the Internet throughout the book encourage students to explore and further research topics of interest.
  • A detachable bookmark provides students with frequently used conversational expressions and function words needed for discussion.
  • ¡A QUE SÍ! is organized around four high-interest themes: Espacios: Públicos y privados, Encuentros y desencuentros, Patria/Nación: Acercamientos, and De acá para allá. These topics were selected for their general contemporary relevance and to help increase students' awareness and understanding of Hispanic culture and global issues.
  • Two vocabulary sections introduce each lesson. "Palabra por palabra" highlights frequently used Spanish words that appear in the reading. "Mejor dicho" examines false cognates and other problem words. Sequentially placed, these sections facilitate vocabulary acquisition and practice before the actual reading.
  • Found before every reading selection, the "¡Alto!" section of ¡A QUE SÍ! features techniques for improving reading skills, taps previous background knowledge, and at times examines specific grammatical items.
  • "Estrategias comunicativas" contains colloquial words and phrases. The goal of this section is to help students express themselves in everyday situations, such as asking for opinions or directions, agreeing or disagreeing, and expressing emotions such as surprise or gratitude.
