About

Overview

Passenger and Immigration Lists Index (PILI) was first published in 1981. The initial set indexed 200 passenger lists, covering about 500,000 persons. Since then, forty-three supplements have been released, increasing coverage to more than 5 million names. This is still only a fraction of the 35 million immigrants who reached the New World between the sixteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. It is the aim of PILI to lead you to the sources that will unravel some of the mysteries surrounding this fascinating group of people, particularly as they relate to individual family histories.

Passenger and Immigration Index Series

When your patrons ask for published immigration, passenger and naturalization records of individuals who came to the U.S. and Canada between the 16th and mid-20th centuries, direct them to this comprehensive resource. Here they'll find everything needed for fruitful genealogical research. Main entries in Passenger And Immigration Lists Index provide information such as name and age of immigrant; year and place of arrival, naturalization, or other record indicating that the person indexed was an immigrant; code indicating the source indexed and the page number in the source that contains the record; and the names of all listed family members together with their age and relationship to the main entry. Thirty annual supplements (published 1982-2005) have increased the number of citations to more than four million names indexed.

Features and Benefits

  • Arranged alphabetically, entries include name of immigrant, age, date and port of arrival or place of first mention in New World, names and ages of family members, coded to the primary immigration source, which can be consulted for further information.
  • Within PILI, cross-references connect immigrant ancestors to other family members who immigrated with them to the Americas.
  • The 108,000 newly-profiled persons were drawn from a wide variety of more than 200 sources of genealogical and immigration information, including passenger lists, historical publications, naturalization records, government documents, scholarly journals, ship manifests and other historical sources.
  • The "Bibliography of Sources Indexed" provides complete information about each of the cited sources.

What's New

  • Passenger and Immigration Lists Index: 2020 Supplement assembles 108,000 immigrant names, plus more than 4,000 family members who traveled with these immigrants to the Americas during a span of more than 300 years, between 1617 and 1950.
  • These persons were from more than 75 countries around the world, departing from more than ports in 70 ports in Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and the South Pacific and arriving to more than 35 ports in the geographic area that is now known as North and South America.
  • Several new data points are appearing for the first time in this edition, including: Immigrant Country of Origin, Immigration Occupation, Ship Name, Port of Departure and Date of Departure.
  • The addition of these new data points allow for a more thorough review of the immigrant’s demographic information and help users to narrow their search for ancestors who are of importance to them.
  • Beginning in early 2020, the full PILI content set of more than 5 million immigrants to the Americas will be available in an electronically-searchable format on GDL.
  • Just like solving a puzzle starts with the first puzzle piece, solving the mystery of a family’s history starts with one great source.
  • PILI is one of these great sources of genealogical information.
