Ben and Jerry's mission statement includes information about "initiating innovative ways to improve the quality of life of a broad community – local, national and international." For example, the Ben and Jerry's Foundation was formed to address social and environmental problems. At the same time, the company's mission statement emphasizes "increasing value for our shareholders."
Questions: Do these two aspects of the same mission statement contradict each other? Or, to put it another way, does the effort to contribute to society as a whole through charitable contributions and other company programs compromise the rights of shareholders to receive the best possible return on their investment?
