???label.coverImageAlt??? MindTap for Welten: Introductory German, Enhanced 1st Edition by Prisca Augustyn/Nikolaus Euba

MindTap for Augustyn/Euba's WELTEN: INTRODUCTORY GERMAN, ENHANCED, combines digital and print resources into a rich, seamless presentation of culture, grammar and vocabulary. Set around 12 German-speaking people and the worlds they live in, it focuses on the development of communicative competence and literacy through texts in various modalities. Students acquire and practice functional language skills while developing interpretive and analytical competencies and an appreciation of the aesthetic qualities of language. Students learn to use language while seeing the world through the eyes of others, ultimately learning about themselves and the world they live in. This all-new approach to introductory German delivers an innovative and integral video program, a contextualized and learner-centered presentation of grammar and a unique selection of engaging texts from a broad range of genres.

Prisca Augustyn, Florida Atlantic University

Prisca Augustyn is Professor of German and Linguistics at Florida Atlantic University, where she has been in charge of the German language program since 2002. She teaches courses in German, linguistics and semiotics. Her interest in how we form subjective models of the world through language informs not only her research in linguistics/semiotics, but finds expression in the development of teaching materials and methods for the classroom.

Nikolaus Euba, University of California, Berkeley

Nikolaus Euba is a Senior Lecturer in German and Director of the German Language Program at the University of California, Berkeley, where he teaches language courses at all levels and mentors graduate students who teach in the German department. His research interests focus on integrating (literary) texts into foreign language teaching and learning, a topic on which he frequently develops workshops and gives presentations. In the summer, he serves as Language Program Coordinator at the Freie Universität Berlin Summer University (FUBiS), and he is a consultant to the College Board’s AP German program. In 2013, he was selected as the AATG Post Secondary Outstanding Educator.

  • Your course, your content. Only MindTap gives you complete control over your course. You have the flexibility to reorder textbook chapters, add your own notes and embed a variety of content including OER. Personalize course content to your students' needs. They can even read your notes, add their own and highlight key text to aid their progress.

Get help setting up your course and tailoring it to your specific objectives. You'll be ready to make an impact from day one. And, we'll be right here to help you and your students throughout the semester -- and beyond.
  • MindTap's guided five-step learning path encourages active, self-motivated language learning, empowering students to move more confidently from the basics of language acquisition into meaningful communication.
  • The integrated WELTEN video engages students instantly with characters and content that are real, current and meaningful. Video content complements each chapter with multiple clips showing the profile characters in action, giving them depth and relevancy. Correlated directly to activities in the text, video clips enrich the learning experience by bringing the 12 characters to life. When using MindTap, students can watch the video clips right on the page they're working on. Videos can be viewed in or outside class on a laptop, tablet or even a smartphone.
  • Through authentic materials used in everyday German communication (poems, journals, dramatic readings, texts, videos, blogs, music and media), WELTEN guides learners to develop interpretive and analytical competencies that help them assume different perspectives. Learners see different worlds and cultures through the texts -- and eyes -- of others.
  • Culture is embedded within the text -- especially through the use of authentic materials -- rather than in callouts or boxes, ensuring a truly communicative approach. This format helps students develop appreciation for the aesthetics of language, cultural sensibility and a critical self-awareness.
  • Real language learning gives students what they need to communicate their views and their worlds. WELTEN encourages students to learn the vocabulary they need to talk about things they want to talk about and in ways that are important to them. Grammar presentations are in English. Clear and concise grammar explanations provide structure to language learning while highlighting aspects of functionality and learning strategies.
  • WELTEN revolves around the subjective worlds of 12 different people from German-speaking countries, allowing students to experience a variety of worldviews.
  • Audio files of textual excerpts embedded in the eBook helps students with comprehension and pronunciation. When using MindTap, students can listen to the audio right on the page they're working on either in the Ebook or Activity.
  • Each chapter in WELTEN opens with clear learning goals and a chapter road map. Lernziele outline the content and learning goals at the beginning of each chapter, engaging students in a meaningful learning experience that keeps them focused and motivated. A road map prepares students for the upcoming chapter -- helping them stay organized and on track.
  • Taking a truly communicative-oriented approach, WELTEN reflects the latest theory and practice of foreign-language teaching by prompting students to reflect on the worlds of others as well as examine their own worldview through the lens of another language and culture.

"With MindTap, I am able to assign low-stake assignments like Ready and Learn It before they come to class and therefore, they come prepared for my lecture and activities for that day. The assignments they do prior to class are extremely helpful and informative, so they now have an idea of the work that is coming. This allows for in-class time to be spent on exercises, activities, speaking and using the language."

"I'm so excited about MindTap World Languages—I feel like I have to have it!"

"This is by far the most intuitive, user-friendly platform for languages that I have ever seen."

"Speaking is a scary part of language learning, but I’ve found that by assigning the interactive Use It activities in MindTap, my students have become more accustomed to speaking and recording their answers. This has led to more active participation in class and greater engagement with homework assignments."
