Overview

MASTERING MUSIC FUNDAMENTALS is a prescriptive, hands-on introduction to the fundamentals of music that assists the instructor in presenting the subject matter in a user-friendly format. The organization and presentation of the material in each chapter revolves around basic "principles" that the author explains and reinforces with numerous problems for students to solve. The book does not simply present music theory issues; rather, it guides students using a visual step-by-step process that anticipates and answers students’ questions. A CD-ROM, packaged free with every new copy of the text, includes additional exercises to increase mastery.

"This text could serve to increase student enjoyment, and promote friendly interaction with the instructor largely because students can move at their own pace. Students can go through this material ’step by step’ on their own. This approach promotes student ownership of the material, and reduces the need for the instructor to spend the class time ’lecturing.’

"The handiness of (the Review of Chapter) principles, along with their clarity is great. It made me wish my college text so many years ago had been that convenient. It’s like having that screwdriver in the kitchen drawer, as well as in the garage - handy!"

"The text is extremely well-written and accurate with regard to tonal theory. The guided step by-step procedures for spelling and identifying music structures are excellent."
