CROSSCURRENTS: CULTURES, COMMUNITIES, TECHNOLOGIES is a combined print and online text/webtext designed to provide readings and activities that allow students not only to critically examine mass culture and the media that circulates it but also to engage rhetorically with electronic communication, presentation, and web-authoring and digital imaging technologies. CROSSCURRENTS is available as a full-color printed text and as an electronic text with additional links to YouTube and websites chosen by the authors to extend the conversation and learning experience. CROSSCURRENTS represents the first in a new generation of texts that doesn't make instructors choose between teaching traditional rhetorical concerns and helping students develop as writers and readers of electronic media.

  • Engaging themes explore issues of identity (Chapter 5, Gaming Worlds), what it means to be literate in a digital age (Chapter 2, Information Literacies), and cultural memory (Chapter 4, Shared Memories, Shared Identity), among other issues related to culture, community, and technology.
  • "Cultures, Communities, and Technologies" activities woven throughout each chapter reinforce the key topics of Cultural Studies. These three elements provide opportunities for students to compose while working through the chapter, rather than only at the end of the chapter, or in response to readings. This ensures that students have multiple opportunities to produce texts, not just consume them.
  • "Technological Beginnings" elements guide students in working on that chapter's project and prepare them to work with the online component.
  • Unique "Invention Strategies" in each chapter include the tried-and-true (clustering and mapping, e.g.) along with digital invention strategies that make use of blogs, course wikis, and tweets.
  • Additional "Writing and Composing Activities" suggest possible essay topics at the end of each thematic chapter.
