Overview

À VOUS! is a complete introductory French program that makes learning French easier through its flexible and accessible approach. Now in its second edition, this innovative text integrates the best aspects of theories in second-language acquisition and focuses on the skills crucial to the learning and use of a foreign language in order to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to French language and culture. The program incorporates high-frequency vocabulary that is of interest to today's students, grammar explanations that are complete and comprehensible, a focus on all skills, task-based activities that simulate what students will do during their first travel- or study-abroad experience, and high-interest cultural topics that invite cross-cultural comparisons. The new, enhanced second edition of À VOUS! offers streamlined, visually enhanced grammar presentations that enable professors and students to immediately benefit from classroom activities that focus on using the language in contextualized situations. The iLrn Heinle Learning center also incorporates several improvements including an updated eBook, 40 new video-based pronunciation tutorials, 20 new culture videos, additional practice activities, and more!

  • Cultural Immersion. "À l'aventure!" cultural sections allow students to interact with the culture of various regions from the Francophone world through the study of art, architecture, cuisine, geography, and history. In addition, students also have the opportunity to participate in a virtual blog with a native from that country/region. These highly colorful and culturally authentic sections provide a review of previously covered material, while allowing for communicative practice and cultural expansion.
  • Chapter Reorganization. While retaining all of the main grammar points introduced in the first edition, the chapters have reduced from 16 to 14 and have been reorganized to better balance the presentation of grammar. This greater consistency will make it easier for instructors to create lesson plans, as chapters are of essentially the same length and complexity.
  • Listening Strategies. New "Petits Tuyaux Listening Strategies" have been added to all chapters to help students better understand the listening process. These strategies help students identify specific listening goals to guide them through the activities so that they gain an appreciation for the listening process rather than simply focusing on the end product.
  • Real-World Relevance. Several of the cultural readings have been replaced with contemporary higher-interest and realia-based readings to provoke more in-class discussions.
  • Audio Aids. In addition to the recordings of the dialogues and texts in the new "Passages" sections (formerly "Commençons" and "Continuons"), the second edition now includes recordings of the verb conjugations and the lexicon to aid students in the acquisition of these important aspects of the language.
  • Online Resources. The second edition of À VOUS! is accompanied by new technology offerings including the iLrn™: Heinle Learning Center, the all-in-one, online language learning system and a new Premium Website that offers a full suite of digital resources for both instructors and students.
  • Cultural Coverage. Integrated culture coverage invites students to examine the French-speaking world from another's point of view, compare that world to their own culture, and then complete related activities that focus on various Francophone cultures.
  • Process Approach. The process approach to all skills guides students through the material with consistent recycling of vocabulary and grammar; pre-, during-, and post-reading activities that promote solid writing; and strong reading comprehension support.
  • Communication Activities. Communicative activities and tasks encourage students to interact through interviews, debates, and role-plays that finish with a follow-up task designed for total student participation.
  • Multiple Practice Opportunities. Inductive grammar presentations combined with deductive explanations encourage students to first build comprehension skills and then work through a deductive process, complete with consciousness-raising activities and practice that ranges from mechanical to open-ended.
  • Relevant Vocabulary. Dialogues preceding each vocabulary section introduce new words in contexts that are realistic, engaging, and meaningful to students.
  • Comprehension Checks. "Vérifiez votre comprehension" boxed sections concluding each grammar presentation offer self-correcting thought-provoking questions to help students determine whether they have understood the grammar explanation and if they can find instances of the grammar in context.

"The activities in this text would be easy to fold into a typical classroom. Some lend themselves to instructor presentation, others allow students to talk to each other to produce meaningful language, still others would appeal to visual learners or those working on better listening comprehension. I think the shear variety of activities make this a very inclusive text, one that is adaptable to several specific classroom situations."

"I think the topics are engaging. I really like the way students are required to read the text in French, but then the comprehension questions are in English. Mixing the 2 languages easily makes the process of learning less stressful for students."

"[À VOUS] is a well structured textbook with a very good sequence, variety of exercises, activities for the 4 communicative skills and lots of resources for the student and the instructor."
