About The Solution

Overview

This "Election Update" edition of Bessette/Pitney’s AMERICAN GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS: DELIBERATION, DEMOCRACY AND CITIZENSHIP, is complete with 2010 election information. Like its previous edition, the text has three underlying principles: Citizenship, History and Democracy. Via two unique chapters -- Chapter 4: American Citizenship and Chapter 5: Civic Culture -- authors Joseph Bessette and John Pitney, Jr. examine the way that civic culture shapes the country and take a close look at civic responsibility. "Deliberative democracy" -- the concept that political systems work best when informed citizens and public officials deliberate to identify and promote the common good -- is considered throughout the text.

Additional Product Information

Features/Benefits

  • Unique chapters E Pluribus Unum: American Citizenship (Chapter 4) and American Civic Culture (Chapter 5) focus on both the legal status of American citizenship and the deeper sense of national unity that ties together a large and diverse population and shows how Americans have a unique set of beliefs about their relationship to government, their country’s place in the world, and their duties to one another.
  • Pledges and Promises boxes make the point that the United States depends on individual fidelity.
  • Myths and Misinformation boxes examine beliefs – often widely-shared – that turn out not to be true.
  • International Perspectives boxes compare the United States with other nations and consider the viewpoints of people across the globe.
  • Deliberation, Citizenship, and You boxes at the end of each chapter challenge students to reason through some important issue or find ways to take part in civic life. These boxes engage students in the great issues of American democracy and remind them that one of the most important responsibilities of citizenship is to deliberate about the common good.

Reviews

Customer Reviews

". . . it introduces the idea of deliberative democracy in the opening chapter, uses it as a framework for understanding American politics, and returns to the concept in subsequent chapters. I very much appreciate the discussion in this opening chapter – and in the preface – of understanding American politics as a mixture of self-interest and political ideas." -- Chris Soper, Pepperdine University
— Chris Soper
"The organizing theme/framework is the #1 strength. Second comes the accessible writing style." -- Michael Nojeim, Prairie View A/M University
— Michael Nojeim
"This text is unique as compared to many other American Government texts as it takes an all-encompassing view of how American politics really works, including the important role that citizens play in the political process. This text encourages students to think critically about our government and to develop an understanding of the world through comparisons of the American government and governments around the world." -- Julie Lester, Macon State College
