Additional Product Information

Features/Benefits

  • Balanced presentation of men's and women's communication issues includes topics such as the men's movement; men's friendships; father/child relationships, including single fathers; and women's issues concerning family and career.
  • Coverage of the role of technology in communication is integrated throughout the text, and includes discussion of the effects of technology on gender communication. Web links are set in bold type throughout the text and are easily accessible via the book's Companion Website.
  • Student commentaries throughout the text vividly illustrate how students relate to gender communication issues.
  • Each chapter ends with a full set of study and learning materials. These materials include thought-provoking "Reflection & Discussion" questions that can be used in class or completed by the student to practice critical thinking and application of concepts.
  • Each chapter in the Ninth Edition opens with "Knowledge Challenge", a set of questions linked to issues in the chapter that are often misunderstood. These questions help students identify their assumptions about gender, communication, and culture before they begin the chapter.
  • The author's incorporation of substantial new research ensures the currency of this edition.

What's New

  • New recommended resources for further study are listed at the end of each chapter.
  • Chapter 2, (Theoretical Approaches to Gender Development), concludes with a new section titled "Theories Working Together" in which the author shows how different theories covered in the chapter complement one another.
  • Chapter 1, (The Study of Communication, Gender, and Culture), has expanded coverage of sexuality and sexual orientation, and new discussions of gender identity and transvestites. Chapter 7, (Becoming Gendered), includes new material on the recently noted trend for some men to extend adolescence. Chapter 11, (Gendered Media), has been reorganized and now includes theoretical grounding in agenda-setting theory, a new section on how women and men use media (especially social media), and expanded coverage of reality television. Chapter 12, (Gendered Power and Violence), now includes coverage of sexual slavery.
  • Research has been updated throughout the book. There are more than 160 new references in this edition. For example, Chapters 5 and 6, (Gendered Verbal Communication and Gendered Nonverbal Communication, respectively), include discussion of recent research suggesting there may be some decline in sex-distinct communication. In addition, Chapter 1 has new coverage of research methods. This new material discusses quantitative, qualitative, and critical methods of research, each of which contributes to the book.
