Sensation and perception is an elective course that is taken by majors and nonmajors alike. The nonmajors who take it are engineers, computer scientists, and cognitive scientists who are going to design visual displays, work for perfume or chemical companies and other places where vision, hearing, taste, and smell come into play. The market ranges from about 45,000 to 70,000, judging from the CMG list of about 919 teachers, assuming a class size between 50-75 per class. Of course, there are 400 students at USC, 300 a term at UCLA, 500 at Binghamton, 500 at Rochester, and 300 at SUNY-Albany, so there are large selected courses around the country. This is a technical, difficult course, so students do NOT flock to it. The instructor needs good visual and auditory material so they don't have to arrange demonstrations themselves, and that's why we created so many elements in Webtutor, and on the CD ROM. At the same time, there have been long-standing objections to having the book plus CD ROM package be so expensive – over $100.00 – so we changed from a CD ROM for sale to a CD ROM with the new book strategy.

About the Author

E. Bruce Goldstein

BRUCE GOLDSTEIN is Associate Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh and Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the University of Arizona. He has received the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Pittsburgh for his classroom teaching and textbook writing. He received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Tufts University and his PhD in experimental psychology from Brown University; he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Biology Department at Harvard University before joining the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. Bruce has published papers on a wide variety of topics, including retinal and cortical physiology, visual attention, and the perception of pictures. He is the author of SENSATION AND PERCEPTION, 9th Edition (Cengage, 2014), and the editor of the BLACKWELL HANDBOOK OF PERCEPTION (Blackwell, 2001) and the two-volume SAGE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PERCEPTION (Sage, 2010).
