Zhao Puchu

A renowned social activist and a prominent Buddhist leader in China, Zhao Puchu (赵朴初; 1907–2000) was also an accomplished calligrapher and a Buddhist scholar. He began studying the doctrines of Buddhism at college. During the War of Resistance against Japan (1937–1945), Zhao participated in charity work in Shanghai. In 1945, he co-founded the China Association for Promoting Democracy (CAPD). From 1949 to 2000, he took on many official posts. Among these are president of the Buddhist Association of China, vice president of China–Japan Friendship Association, and vice president of China–Burma Friendship Association. In addition, Zhao served as vice-chairman of the 9th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and honorary chairman of the 10th Central Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy.
