The Encyclopedia Of Governmental Advisory Organizations (EGAO) is the only comprehensive guide to the permanent, continuing, and ad hoc advisory committees of all kinds reporting to the president, Congress, and various U.S. government departments and agencies. EGAO describes the activities and personnel of groups and committees that function to advise the president of the United States and various departments and agencies of the federal government. Committees include presidential, ad hoc, White House and coordinating, public advisory, interagency and intra-agency, consultative, and conferences. EGAO contains detailed information about historically significant committees. An alphabetical sequence, all organizations are included in the Encyclopedia. In addition, committees can be accessed through the Personnel Index that lists chairperson and staff contact for all committees, as well as any members of national prominence; the Organizations by Presidential Administration Index that alphabetically lists committees established by each president; presidents are listed chronologically by administration, providing a general historical view of the interests of each administration and helps the user locate a committee when only a date or the establishing president is known; and the Organizations by Federal Department or Agency Index that lists all active committees associated with each federal department or agency, helping the researcher to locate a committee when only a departmental affiliation is known. A Publications and Reports Index lists all titled publications of current and defunct committees. Included are both official and popular report names, primarily those known by the name of the chairperson.

Features and Benefits

  • The Encyclopedia Of Governmental Advisory Organizations profiles 8,074 permanent, continuing, and ad hoc advisory committees of all kinds reporting to the president, Congress, and various other U.S. government departments and agencies.
  • Over 40 new governmental advisory organizations have been added to this edition.
  • Active committees are emphasized, but information on historically significant organizations that are no longer functioning, as well as some that were authorized but never activated or funded, are also included.
  • Important regional and interstate commissions of broad public interest are also represented.
  • Entries cover advisory organizations in a wide range of fields, from business and industry to education, science, the arts, and professions.
  • Descriptive listings in Encyclopedia Of Governmental Advisory Organizations typically include full contact information, including address, phone, fax, email, web URL and homepage; designated federal employee; history; programs; findings/recommendations; members; staff; subsidiary units; publications/reports; meetings; and a remarks section for additional information, which does not fall into the scope of these standard categories.
  • EGAO, a three-volume softcover resource, has a user-friendly format.
  • Subject keywords within each section appear as bolded subheadings and are listed at the top of each page, along with the section name.
  • Two appendixes follow the descriptive listings; these contain a directory of committee management officers and a listing of U.S. regional government depository libraries (where federal government documents can be located).
  • Five indexes allow access to the descriptive listings by staff or contact name, publication or report name, presidential administration, federal department or agency, and organization name and keyword.
