Author Bio

Liang Sicheng

Liang Sicheng (Liang Ssu-ch’eng, 1901–1972) is generally recognized as the “Father of Modern Chinese Architecture”. After obtaining a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, he returned to China in 1928 and taught architecture at Northeastern University and Tsinghua University while establishing the modern Chinese architecture curriculum. As a prominent architectural historian, Liang consistently pursued the historical knowledge of China through extensive documentation and presentation of ancient buildings and artefacts, and advocated the rebirth of a national architecture. His ground-breaking works on the history of Chinese architecture have perpetuated an understanding of Chinese architecture in a global context and are still highly regarded even today in the architectural academia.
