About

Overview

Integrating business law with ethics and effective management, Bagley's MANAGERS AND THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT: STRATEGIES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY, 8E equips students with the legal knowledge and risk management techniques essential for success in global business management. Renowned for its cutting-edge coverage and strategic approach, this book offers one of the most comprehensive yet student-friendly presentations of today's global legal environment of business. Its in-depth coverage of business law also makes it suitable for courses in business law. Proven learning features such as "Inside Story" and "Perspective" boxes illustrate how the law impacts daily management decisions and business strategies, and "A Manager's Dilemma" feature challenges students to consider such issues as whether to outsource labor to a country known for poor working conditions and the ethics of structuring a business to avoid domestic taxes. Fulfilling AACSB requirements, the eighth edition addresses the legal, political, regulatory, and ethical dimensions of business. Reflecting the latest developments and decisions, the text's up-to-date coverage includes the regulation of commercial speech, the disclosure of corporate political spending, the application of the Fourth Amendment to cell phone location data, the patentability of human genes, employees' use of social media, regulatory responses to climate change, the fiduciary duties of managers of limited liability companies, the FCC's proposed rules on net neutrality, the constitutionality of Obamacare, the use of race in college admissions, the Defense of Marriage Act, NSA surveillance programs, the right of college football players to unionize, and more.

Features and Benefits

  • PREPARE STUDENTS FOR REAL-WORLD BUSINESS. Offering cutting-edge coverage, MANAGERS AND THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT: STRATEGIES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY, 8E teaches future managers how to use law and legal tools to create value while minimizing legal and business risk, attain core business objectives, identify and resolve legal issues before they become problems, and effectively handle legal disputes.
  • TREATMENT OF THE GLOBAL LEGAL ENVIRONMENT IS THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE ON THE MARKET. Business law authority Constance Bagley offers thorough coverage of the most essential business law topics--such as agency, contracts, sales, torts, criminal law, antitrust, and employment law--as well as specialized topics crucial to business managers, including intellectual property, lending transactions and bankruptcy, securities regulation and bans on insider trading, and environmental law.
  • IN-DEPTH CASE TREATMENT TEACHES CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS. Provided as summaries or presented in the actual language of the court, numerous cases in each chapter represent key court decisions that shape important business law concepts or present key legal conflicts that managers will address in their careers. The associated critical thinking questions require students to analyze what they have read and to predict the decision's impact on future cases.
  • "PERSPECTIVE BOXES" OFFER AN INTERDISCIPLINARY VIEW OF TODAY'S LAW. Clearly show students how history, politics, and economics affect the evolution of the law with intriguing "Perspective Boxes" throughout the text. Each box focuses on a historical, political, or economic perspective to help students become more aware of the interplay between these three areas and the law.
  • "THE RESPONSIBLE MANAGER" AND "A MANAGER'S DILEMMA" SECTIONS INTEGRATE LAW, MANAGEMENT, AND ETHICS. These insightful features summarize each chapter from a managerial perspective and discuss the critical legal, risk management, and ethical issues that successful managers must consider to avoid costly, time-consuming litigation or regulatory fines. These management features offer useful on-the-job references for practicing business managers long after the course is complete.
  • ENHANCED SPECIAL FEATURES PIQUE STUDENT INTEREST. Proven learning features "A Global View," "Ethical Considerations," and "Inside Story" add intriguing depth and memorable character to the book's presentation. These special sections encourage active student involvement in meaningful classroom discussions.
