About

Overview

ART AND CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT FOR YOUNG CHILDREN, 7th Edition, is a comprehensive, must-have resource for establishing and implementing a developmentally appropriate art program. Written for pre-service and in-service early childhood professionals in child care, preschool, or kindergarten through third grade settings, the text takes a child-centered approach to art education. The book blends theory and research with practical applications as it discusses important topics and issues related to creative experience, including art and the developing child, special needs and diversity, and children’s artistic development. Also discussed are planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating art along with strategies for integrating art across the curriculum. The updated Seventh Edition gives greater emphasis to communication with families, and includes such new topics as digital camerawork and the use of recycled materials in art.

Features and Benefits

  • The book stresses the process approach, demonstrating its importance to creative development.
  • Play, music, and movement are discussed as they pertain to children’s creativity.
  • An in-depth discussion of technology aids teachers in understanding the role technology can play in children’s visual art appreciation and production.
  • Each chapter includes information and discussion on addressing the needs of all children within the classroom and curriculum.
  • “Opportunities for Teacher Reflection,” drawn from real early childhood teachers and classrooms, encourage readers to think about and discuss complex issues facing young children and their teachers.
  • Activities and recipes make the text a valuable resource for in-service teachers.

What's New

  • New! In each section, a sample “A Letter to the Family” makes it easy for new teachers to share classroom experiences with children’s parents and caregivers. These letters--which describe such topics as a classroom “museum” of children’s art, the use of computers as art tools, and reasons for encouraging child-centered art--keep parents informed about, and engaged in, the learning and development of their children.
  • New! A “Green” icon highlights art activities that use recycled or reclaimed materials.
  • New! Expanded material on brain research reflects current knowledge about this important topic.
  • New! New material on the use of digital cameras in the arts classroom updates the book’s in-depth discussion of technology.
