About

Features and Benefits

  • Each chapter is organized around three ideas that are salient to athletes – Preparation, Performance, and Post-Game Review. Material presented in the sections designated "Preparation" provide background information on the topic or concepts covered. The "Performance" section introduces students to strategies for being more effective learners. The "Post-Game Review" section provides students with a summary of the material covered in the chapter, which is an opportunity to consolidate what they have just learned.
  • Each chapter contains a Self-Assessment and Review Questions. Self-Assessment exercises evaluate students' knowledge of the current topics and use of relevant strategies. Review Questions determine how well students have learned the material presented.
  • An abundance of both individual and group exercises throughout the text encourage students to be active learners.
  • Journal activities at the end of each chapter encourage students to reflect upon lessons of the chapter as well as their own personal development.
  • Goal-Setting exercises at the end of each chapter ask students to set realistic goals for improved performance both academically and athletically.

What's New

  • The Third Edition has been reorganized around four main areas: 1) Laying the Foundation for Success 2) Succeeding in the Classroom 3) Succeeding in Life and Relationships and 4) Succeeding on the Field.
  • It features an entirely new chapter on Becoming a Mentally Tough Athlete (Ch. 13). For decades, mental toughness has been viewed as an essential component of performance excellence. This special new chapter defines mental toughness, introducing students to the key characteristics that underlie it. The authors provide students with concrete mental skills that, if practiced and implemented, will help student athletes become mentally tougher competitors.
  • In addition, special design elements have been incorporated to encourage the active involvement of students as they read the material and complete exercises. New topics in the feature boxes are included in each chapter. The Third Edition addresses current topics such as managing social networking sites, credit cards, recovery from injury, and acceptable classroom behaviors.
  • At the beginning of each chapter, a story of a current student-athlete is presented to increase the relevance of the topics that will be covered. These stories speak to the very real issues that collegiate athletes face each day and serve to connect students to the concepts and strategies presented in the chapter.
  • Finally, in the section designated 'Post-Game Review', students are provided with a summary of the material covered in the chapter, which is an opportunity to consolidate what they have just learned.
