About

Overview

ARCHETYPES OF WISDOM: AN INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY, 8E brings philosophy to life through lively narratives, engaging illustrations, and a student-friendly writing style. Using its signature conversational prose, the textbook guides students through the lives and works of history's greatest philosophers, then brings it all together with helpful study materials in every chapter. Drawing from both canonical primary sources and the latest philosophical critiques, ARCHETYPES OF WISDOM: AN INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY, 8E makes philosophy approachable and exciting for students.

Efficacy and Outcomes

Reviews

"Soccio's pedagogy and methodology are masterful. I have used this text in several incarnations starting with the second edition. I keep coming back to it because it makes my job easier. He works hard to make things clear to beginners without obvious 'dumbing down.' College students notice when they are being condescended to, and it destroys their motivation."

— Kerrin McMahan, East Los Angeles University

"The writing style here is appropriate. It has a good flow, and uses language familiar to students. It helps students apply the more abstract ideas they have just read about, which makes it more likely the ideas will be learned."

— Dennis Cooley, North Dakota State University

"I quite like the philosophical queries and the author's use of questions that help the student to reflect upon the issues and their relevance for thinking about current issues. It keeps philosophy a living subject."

— Jonathan Gainor, Harrisburg Area Community College

Author Bio

Douglas J. Soccio

Douglas Soccio was professor of philosophy at Shasta College for nearly 30 years. In addition to ARCHETYPES OF WISDOM: AN INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY, 9E, he is the author of HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF PHILOSOPHY, and, with Vincent E. Barry, PRACTICAL LOGIC, all of which are published by Cengage Learning. For three years he wrote a weekly philosophy column for the REDDING RECORD SEARCHLIGHT. Now devoted to writing on a full-time basis, he is presently developing a collection of philosophical stories that express what he describes as “philosophy with a heart,” a generous notion of philosophy that infuses all of his writing.
