About

Overview

CONTROVERSES is built around the goals of the National Standards and French thought (including point/counterpoint/synthesis), and presents timely and provocative issues that are important to the French and francophone world, while at the same time, relevant to today's student. CONTROVERSES is a student-centered, advanced intermediate French program geared toward the communicative, analytical classroom. The high interest topics and well-crafted activities presented in the text will stimulate conversation and thoughtful debate in the classroom, foster students' conversational skills, while encouraging them to learn and practice the language. Each chapter provides students with the opportunity to express themselves verbally and in writing while systematically addressing each of the 5 C's.

Features and Benefits

  • Each chapter provides students with opportunities to express themselves both verbally and in writing while systematically addressing each of the 5 C's. By addressing these National Standards, students are able to communicate more effectively in French while drawing cultural and structural comparisons between the francophone world and their own.
  • One of the strongest and most distinguishable features of the program is the presentation of opposing viewpoints. Unlike many programs' static approach to cultural presentation, CONTROVERSES invites students to analyze a topic 'in the French style' by reading and studying several viewpoints before deciding on a personal point of view.
  • In order to stimulate class discussion, chapter topics center on several culturally relevant issues such as: bilingualism, globalization, immigration, the media and private life, and individual versus collective freedom.
  • The "Redaction guidée" section in the text aids the students in the development of their writing about the given topics. The students are asked to first present and describe their topic and then express the arguments both for and against this topic. Next, in the "Synthèse" section the student must introduce a third and completely new perspective on the topic that challenges them to rise above the two sides previously presented. Finally, in the conclusion the student summarizes and expresses his or her opinions on the issue.
  • The Student Activities Manual is the companion volume to the text and contains user-friendly grammar explanations and practice, exercises to build oral and written accuracy, listening activities and reflective exercises. Additional writing in the "Atelier d'écriture" section encourages students to rehearse how to describe and explain familiar objects and phenomena, how to write for different purposes and different audiences, and how to articulate personal and persuasive arguments.

What's New

  • NEW: Brief Exercises based on the grammar covered in each chapter of the Cahier are now included in the Manuel to help intermediate students negotiate meaning with the grammatical tools necessary to do so.
  • NEW: The questions in the "Avez-vous compris?" section (following each Point and Countre-point) are better distinguished from the questions in the "Qu'en pensez-vous?" section. Rather than simply asking open-ended questions about each reading, the activities now offer more measurable means of checking for students' comprehension.
  • NEW: Several of the readings have been replaced with new and more contemporary selections. Dated data, statistics (typically, in the Liens socio-culturels section) have been updated throughout to reflect more recent information related to the French-speaking world.
  • NEW: The writing program in the Manuel has been reviewed and expanded to focus more on the writing process. The revisions include pre-writing activities, and more guided practice that helps students develop more complete outlines.
  • NEW: In the Student Activities Manual, grammar explanations and activities have been edited for clarity. Activity direction lines have been simplified and clarified. Icons have been added to show which exercises work well as oral activities.
