About

Overview

This best-selling reader is designed to transition students from reading highly controlled elementary-level materials to appreciating authentic literature. Written primarily in the twentieth century by authors from Spain, Latin America, and the United States, the 31 short stories in ALBUM appear in order of increasing difficulty. Many features, including generous notes and glosses and a range of varied activities, aid comprehension, encourage oral and written self-expression, and promote cooperative learning, as well as critical thinking about the selections.

Features and Benefits

  • A range of practice reflects the readings, with varied exercises for each selection—from comprehension checks to directed, interpretive, and comparative writing assignments, as well as pair and small group activities.
  • Integration of writing by greats of past and present, showcasing many of the key writers that have influenced the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
  • While not ignoring the larger Spanish-speaking world, a focus on writing by Hispanics in the US illustrates for students the influence and impact that these writers' attitudes, philosophies and perspectives have had on the larger cultural fabric of the United States.
  • Two audio CDs, recorded by native speakers, feature dramatic readings of each selection in the Fourth Edition. Correlated to the dramatic readings, practice in the Audio section assesses students' listening comprehension through a series of true/false questions.
  • Marginal glosses and cultural notes minimize the time students spend looking up words and other references, so that the flow of reading is not interrupted.
  • Additional vocabulary in the back provides reference for students while writing.
  • Dramatizaciones activities allow for pair and group practice, in consistent sequence, allowing the activities to build in complexity while remaining accessible.
