About

Overview

This book traces the conception of systemic theory and how it continues to be adapted by various theorists and therapists in the treatment of families. The philosophy of the book seeks to encourage students to consider themselves as part of the systems with which they work, and to respect their own strengths and personalities even as they encourage clients to do the same. The theme of this book points out that although each theory that it discusses has its own value for working with families, some are more or less effective for specific populations, cultures and issues.

Reviews

"I think the text is an excellent introduction to the field of family therapy. It presents seminal ideas and people involved in the field from its beginning to the present in a way that is clear and easily understood. It is comprehensive in its coverage of the material yet, manages to be succinct and focused."

— Jean-Louis Marchand, Cheasapeake College

"I believe the strength of this text is the authors’ intent to deliver this content in a way that allows the reader to make it personal, to feel involved in the evolving field. The author walks the readers through history and leaves them with the challenge of integrating their own models and participating in the evolution of our field."
