About

Overview

In RESEARCH METHODS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, Fifth Edition, bestselling statistics author Fredrick J Gravetter and co-author Lori-Ann B. Forzano help students see how interesting and exciting experimental and nonexperimental research can be. Inviting and conversational, the text leads students through the research process from start to finish. It begins with tips and strategies for generating research ideas, moves to selecting measures and participants, and then offers an examination of research strategy and design. This step-by-step approach emphasizes the decisions researchers must make at each stage of the process. The authors avoid a "cookbook" presentation by linking terminology with applied concepts; their "lecture in a book" style makes the text accessible to students by emphasizing discussion and explanation of topics. Each chapter ends with a set of student exercises and activities. Examples and content throughout the book reflect the most current APA guidelines.

Features and Benefits

  • Chapter 15 has been reorganized to integrate new material on research design and statistical analyses, which assists students in determining which statistical analysis is appropriate based on the research design and the data. New tables present examples of data in different categories of designs and new flow charts identify the appropriate statistical procedures for data in each category.
  • Chapter 16 presents a new sample research report (completely reproduced in Appendix D) that provides examples of manuscript pages. A new table demonstrates a wide variety of citation styles, and another new table updates reference formats, emphasizing formats for referencing electronic sources.
  • Updated Appendices include references (in Appendix B) to the corresponding SPSS demonstrations in Appendix C for each statistical calculation, where appropriate; examples demonstrating the current version of SPSS (Appendix C); and a new example of a research report demonstrating the revised APA-style guidelines (Appendix D).
  • The authors use an informal, conversational writing style that emphasizes discussion and explanation of topics, rather than a simple "cookbook" presentation of facts.
  • This text includes chapter learning objectives, chapter overviews, chapter preview examples, chapter summaries, and a list of keywords for quick review at the end of each chapter. Instructors can use the learning checks and end-of-chapter exercises and activities as prepackaged assignments.
  • Organized according to the research process, the book is appropriate for use in a lecture-only class or a class with a lab component. The order of chapters can be varied to meet the requirements of different instructors.

What's New

  • This edition is available with MindTap™, an online personalized learning experience built on the text's content. MindTap for Research Methods engages students in key course content through essential readings, quizzes and research analysis, while the Research Tutor helps students stay on task with their research paper by breaking down the process into assignable and manageable modules, and providing helpful guidance along the way. Instructors can customize the content and learning tools if they wish; for instance, by adding their own content and exercises.
  • New Chapter Previews put students into a "mind-set" that prepares them for learning the chapter content. Each preview piques students' curiosity with an inherently interesting example that raises the major issue to be covered in the chapter.
  • Material throughout each chapter has been revised to focus on learning objectives, which are now identified at the beginning of each chapter section. The objectives are also correlated with each end-of-chapter Exercise and Engagement Activity to assist students in mastering the objectives.
  • Essay-style Learning Checks, formerly at the end of each chapter section, have been replaced with objective multiple-choice questions-with at least one question for each learning objective. Answers are provided to help students identify which content they have mastered.
  • Almost all end-of-chapter exercise sets and engagement activities have been revised or replaced with a greater number of higher-level learning items.
  • Throughout the book, research examples have been updated and hypothetical results have been replaced with real research examples. Where necessary, tables and figures have been revised.
  • Chapter 1 has been significantly revised and refined. For instance, information regarding hypotheses now clarifies the idea that a single hypothesis can lead to several different predictions, and that each prediction refers to a specific situation or an event that can be observed and measured. A new section makes a distinction between quantitative and qualitative research. The focus of step four of the research process now includes not only identification of participants or subjects, but also decisions for selection and planning for their ethical treatment.
  • Chapter 2 is now titled "Research Ideas and Hypotheses" to more accurately reflect its content. Recognizing students' increased technological skill, material on finding background literature and conducting a literature search using PsycINFO has been vastly reduced. New material on critically reading a journal article helps students through the difficult task of finding ideas for new studies. A new section discusses how to convert a research idea into a hypothesis, including detailed characteristics of a good hypothesis.
  • In Chapter 3, discussion of the consistency of a relationship has been moved to the beginning of the section on validity and reliability of measurement (because validity and reliability are often established by a consistent relationship between two different measurements). The distinction between concurrent and convergent validity has been clarified, and revised terminology now distinguishes situations in which researchers are "blind" and in which participants are "blind" or "naïve."
  • Sections on ethical guidelines for research with humans and nonhumans (Chapter 4) have been updated in accordance with the APA 2010 amendments to the Ethics Code.
  • A new section in Chapter 6 discusses the similarities and differences between nonexperimental and correlational research strategies. The section distinguishing research strategies, research designs, and research procedures appears earlier in the chapter and the detailed discussion of time-related threats to internal validity has been moved to Chapter 9 on within-subjects experiments.
  • Chapter 10 now focuses on nonexperimental designs and introduces some of the modifications that produce closely related quasi-experimental designs. A new box compares and contrasts differential and correlational research and a new table presents an overview of the nonexperimental and quasi-experimental research designs that are discussed in the following sections. There's also a new section on applications and statistical analyses for nonexperimental and quasi-experimental research designs.
  • In Chapter 11, a new research example comparing the effectiveness of studying text printed on paper to text presented on a computer screen is used to introduce factorial designs. A new section describes the statistical evaluation of the results from a factorial design.
  • Chapter 12 presents the section on comparing correlational, experimental, and differential research earlier in the chapter as a more distinct way to introduce the correlational strategy. A new section explains how to interpret and statistically evaluate the results from correlational research.
  • Chapter 13, "The Descriptive Research Strategy," is updated to more prominently feature use of the Internet to administer surveys.
