About

Overview

Helps students acquire proficiency in communicating within culturally-significant contexts, inviting students to examine and appreciate differences and similarities among individuals and cultures in an interconnected world.

Features and Benefits

  • CHEZ NOUS sections offer a first person account of life in a variety of French-speaking countries; INFO-CULTURE discusses day-to-day living and explores cultural values; and Francophone culture contextualizes activities throughout the text.
  • Students learn French in situational/functional context. For example, the SITUATION conversations that accompany each EXPLORATION take place in an authentic situational or functional context designed to illustrate "real-life" use of the language. Grammar exercises are also placed in a context to demonstrate ways in which the grammar could be used in authentic cultural settings or in situations typically encountered in daily life. The "task-based" activities that accompany the SITUATIONS further illustrate language functions.
  • The entire francophone world is emphasized as much as continental France and traditional francophone countries such as Belgium or Switzerland.
  • Explorations sections form a logical progression from understanding a particular grammar topic to practicing it in meaningful contexts, and most importantly, to using these forms in communicative situations. Three grammar points are introduced in each chapter.
  • Short dialogues allow frequent practice of new vocabulary and give students the opportunity to work on pronunciation.
  • INTÉGRATION ET PERSPECTIVES sections provide activities that synthesize everything students have learned in the chapter and feature a reading, a writing and listening activity. Strategies guide students in their practice of these important skills.

What's New

  • Info-culture sections which provide information on everyday life, have been revised, up-dated, and expanded upon to show French and French speakers in a global context, and many of the ET VOUS? activities have been rewritten for greater student interest.
  • CHEZ NOUS sections have been revised so that they are better integrated with the chapter theme and now include pre- and post-reading pedagogy that will help beginning students better master the material. The pre-reading questions trigger interest in the material before students read it; post-reading questions test comprehension and ask students to go to outside sources, such as the Internet, to explore a topic further.
  • New locales described in CHEZ NOUS sections include Louisiana, Haiti, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon among others.
  • The presentation of the imperfect and the subjunctive are introduced earlier (Chapter 12), allowing students more time for practicing these verb structures which are often difficult for students to grasp.
  • BIEN PRONONCER sections now appear in every chapter and provide discrimination and oral practice exercises so that students can work on improving pronunciation throughout the entire course.
  • New vocabulary related to current technology teaches students words that are increasingly becoming part of day-to-day language.
  • New technology supplements include a QUIA online workbook/lab manual that provides students with immediate feedback and instructors with a gradebook and course management features; a WebTutor Toolbox on WebCT and Blackboard Study Guide; a student CD-ROM; and an Instructor's Resource CD-ROM with testing program that makes planning the course fully customizable.
  • The text audio program has been expanded to now include recordings of the situations as well as chapter vocabulary.

Efficacy and Outcomes

Reviews

"As far as I am concerned, among all the first year manuals I am familiar with, INVITATION does the best job in giving a real and practical comprehensive introduction to the whole francophone world. As universities in the United States increasingly reshape their programs around the notion of cultural diversity and globalization, administrators and colleagues around the country will embrace that aspect of the book."

— Alain-Phillipe Durand, University of Rhode Island

"The Info-culture sections seem to be much richer than the typical culture ‘blurbs’ found in many textbooks."

— Lara Mangiafico, George Mason University

". . .the new CHEZ NOUS pre- and post-reading activities are terrific. Without them, this section may have sparked interest in very motivated students, but now there is some reason for everybody to look."

— Patricia A. Pierce, Baylor University

"[I am] favorably impressed by the authors’ desire to update the cultural information, to present current language usage, to re-sequence certain grammatical presentations and to include pronunciation exercises in each chapter."

— George McCool, Towson University

"I am most attracted by programs that use the internet effectively to reinforce authentic situations and lead to interactive activities in class. This text does a nice job of this."

— Lynne Gelber, Skidmore College
