About

Overview

Keep the success up! ¡CONTINUEMOS! offers a complete, fully integrated intermediate Spanish program. Designed to consolidate the skills acquired in introductory-level course, the program develops in a spiral approach, fostering the gradual integration of communicative skills and cultural competency. The new features invite students to expand their knowledge online, to engage with real Spanish-speaking people through video interviews, and to exchange with their peers though a set of pairs and group activities devoted to grammar, discussion, and conversation. This flexible and thorough program prepares students for continued success with Spanish.

Features and Benefits

  • Flexible, Skill-building Program. ¡CONTINUEMOS! allows instructors to link the themes, structures, vocabulary, and grammar review and companion texts of this program together in any combination or independently to prepare students for continued success with the Spanish.
  • Comprehensive, Balanced Coverage. The program combines a comprehensive review and expansion of the basic structures of Spanish with high-frequency vocabulary, intensive practice, and contextualized and personalized opportunities for communication. The balanced coverage contributes to a thorough and solid skill acquisition.
  • Accessible, Contextualized Language. Each lesson opens with a thematic passage introducing new vocabulary and grammar. New items are practiced throughout the lesson supported with clear grammar explanations in English, numerous examples of usage, nuances, and challenges in usage and meaning.
  • Engaging, Thematic Coverage. ¡CONTINUEMOS! contains four new themes--personal relationships, Spanish American cuisines, the Latin presence in entertainment worldwide, work and technology, and five new readings to strengthen the diverse thematic coverage of this edition. This contemporary content, carefully crafted, is very engaging for students.
  • Expanded Listening-Skills Practice. Improved listening material, ranging from slow-paced narrations to faster-paced conversations and songs, exposes learners to increasingly challenging tasks, preparing them for real-life listening situations and interactions.
  • Greater Emphasis on Vocabulary Acquisition. Themed related vocabulary is presented early in each chapter, enabling learners to practice early on about target themes while the contextualized and open-ended activities provide realistic situations and opportunities for the creative use of active vocabulary. This method enhances the secure acquisition of new vocabulary.
  • Careful Recycling Throughout. The recycling of materials supports the recognition, production, and acquisition of vocabulary and grammar. In the cumulative end-of-lesson section called "¡Continuemos!" students are given opportunities of practice to understand cultural facts, use active vocabulary, and recycle grammar including examples and explanations.
  • Strong Cultural Focus. Focusing on a specific geographic country or region, each lesson ranges in coverage from practices, products, and perspectives to cross-cultural comparisons. This encourages discussions that expand students' knowledge of the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
  • Program of Learning Strategies. Offers a spiral approach to strategy instruction through the gradual incorporation of reading and writing strategies. This method successfully fosters students' independence as critical thinkers.

Efficacy and Outcomes

Reviews

"The post-reading questions are very good, since it forces students to examine their own country, and then expand on what they know through comparisons to countries in Latin America, which can be an expanded portion of the Temas de conversacion section. The conversational expressions I believe are essential to helping students have a meaningful conversation as well as sounding more like native speakers. This will increase their confidence in conversational techniques."

— James Courtad, Illinois Wesleyan University

"I really like the variety of exercises and the grammatical descriptions. The vocabulary and chapter topics are very relevant, as they reflect all aspects of culture and current events. Many of the debates and conversational exercises force students to examine their own culture and heritage as well, in order to be able to comment on and compare and contrast them with Hispanic culture."

— James Courtad, Illinois Wesleyan University

"The grammar and vocabulary sections are very good, and I feel they are an asset to helping students acquire Spanish."

— James Courtad, Illinois Wesleyan University

"I really like the representation of various countries, gender of authors, and styles of literature in this mix."

— Bethany Sanio, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

"The types of activities are well thought through and have a balanced ratio of individual versus pair and group activities. I also think the activities and their variety provide enough practice for the students. This is done very well. Conversemos is a great part of this textbook. It gives ample opportunity for students to apply what they have learned in an interesting manner. I applaud this portion of the textbook."

— Bethany Sanio, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

"I really like Vinetas Culturales. The level and relevance of the cultural reading is achieved by reading and re-reading these vinetas. Explaining the meaning of the author opens up the floor for full-length discussion, followed by the idiomatic conversational expressions that at the end has all groups fully immersed in the discussion not only of the author but of their own experiences. This section has always been embraced by students because they can relate their experiences to what they're reading!"

— Nelly McRae, Hampton University

"Conversemos is unique!! A great opportunity to put into practice all material learned. Discussion and debates are accepted and "loved" by students because it give them an opportunity to express themselves fluently or near-native fluency"

— Nelly McRae, Hampton University

"I think this text does a very nice job balancing the study of language with learning culture and communication strategies. It is well rounded in the sense that it includes the four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking through interesting and thorough activities and explanations."

— Angeles Aller, Whitworth University
