About

Overview

The RUMBOS program, now in a new ENHANCED edition, provides robust support to help students 'fill in the gaps' that might be left from their first year of Spanish study, including review activities, indices of first year grammar and vocabulary, and student annotations. At the same time, RUMBOS carefully leads students to higher levels of communicative competence through the combination of functional and contextualized vocabulary presentations, targeted practice of more advanced and often problematic grammatical structures, and process-oriented reading and writing sections with integrated skill-building strategies. RUMBOS prepares students for advanced language study by involving them in authentic literary readings and academic writing tasks and by weaving in communicative activities geared to oral presentations. This new ENHANCED EDITION also showcases five, engaging cortos (short, independent films), providing instructors with new tools for presenting language and culture and giving students the opportunity to see the Spanish-speaking world from a new perspective. The RUMBOS program also provides plentiful instructor support through its transparent and flexible chapter structure, teacher annotations, and ancillary materials. Instructors using RUMBOS will find crafting creative, stimulating, and fun lesson plans effortless.

Features and Benefits

  • The new streamlined chapter structure and new eye-catching design consisting of sections on two facing pages or on one complete page work together to support both learning and teaching. The new and expanded chapter openers set the theme and introduce students to the country or region of focus and then move efficiently and effectively onward to vocabulary, culture, and grammar sections. An end-of-chapter section then wraps up with all new review and synthesis activities followed by revised and new process-oriented reading, writing, and video sections and the chapter's complete active vocabulary list.
  • A three-tiered approach to vocabulary development helps students learn necessary lexical items while also helping them develop functional proficiency in the language. Students acquire new words in the visual presentation of "Vocabulario." The following vocabulary list contains the Spanish-English listings for all boldface, active words in the visual vocabulary presentation plus additional, high-frequency items related to the section's theme. Finally, "Lengua" student sidebars address the richness and diversity of Spanish and direct students to theme-related vocabulary in the end matter that they should recognize from prior study of Spanish.
  • Each chapter--except Chapter 10 which presents two grammar points--contains three carefully sequenced, manageable grammar presentations. Extensively revised and contextualized by the chapter's theme and vocabulary, these explanations allow students to easily see the connections between form and meaning. After each grammar presentation, a wide range of controlled "¡A practicar!" activities fosters practical acquisition of grammar items. These are then followed by an array of more open-ended, interactive "¡A conversar!" that build students' communicative skills.
  • Reading is balanced in each chapter in two brief cultural readings ("Perspectiva I" and "Perspectiva II") and one literary selection ("¡A leer!"), all of which are relevant to the chapter's theme and country or region of focus. Each reading section guides students through the reading process with pre-reading and post-reading activities. The cultural readings provide activities for cross-cultural comparison and analysis as well as Internet-based explorations. The literary readings provide strategies to build overall reading skills and expose students to a variety of genres and authors.
  • RUMBOS is accompanied by the highly acclaimed iLrn¿: Heinle Learning Center, which places all of the elements crucial to students' success under one roof. The online workbook enhances student learning with its clear organization and abundance of purposeful interactive activities. In addition, iLrn: Heinle Learning Center includes a web-based, intelligent study system that saves time for students and instructors by providing a complete package of diagnostic quizzes, a personalized study plan for each chapter, integrated multimedia elements, learning modules, and an instructor's gradebook.

What's New

  • A NEW selection of five short films from around the world, showcasing a spectrum of genres--from the humorous and heartwarming to the thoughtful and tragic--along with brand new activities to practice vocabulary, grammar, culture and listening comprehension provide an additional window into the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Rumbos includes the following five award-winning, independent, and contemporary short films: Ana y Manuel, Victoria para Chino, Barcelona Venecia, Medalla al empeño, and Un juego absurdo.
  • The new chapter structure offers a streamlined, easy-to-navigate three-part organization. Students begin with the first vocabulary and culture sections and two grammar points. They then progress through the second vocabulary and culture sections and the last grammar point. The chapter wraps with the Impresiones cumulative and synthesis section containing review and expansion activities, a literary reading, a process writing section, a video section, and an end-of chapter vocabulary reference list.
  • The new eye-catching, colorful design and organization of sections on two facing pages or on one complete page are both user-friendly and supportive of learning and teaching. New 4-page chapter openers introduce the chapter goals and set the stage for the featured country/countries with new maps, revised time lines, new Google Earth and video features, and all new activities. Each end-of-chapter Impresiones section now begins with two new sets of practice: ¡A repasar! activities review and synthesize the chapter's vocabulary, grammar, and culture while ¡Más allá! extends them with listening, music, and Internet activities.
  • In each chapter, two new Perspectiva sections, formerly called Espejos, provide new and revised expanded cultural readings with a broader set of supporting sections: Anticipación (pre-reading), Comprensión (comprehension), Entre culturas (cross-cultural comparison and analysis), and Internet-based Extensión (expansion).
  • The grammar explanations in each chapter have been extensively revised, "aired out," and reorganized into three Estructura y uso sections per chapter, resulting in clear, manageable, and focused explanations with an increased number of helpful examples and model sentences.
  • The visually-based, contextualized vocabulary presentations have been updated and streamlined for a greater emphasis on high-frequency items. In addition, for students' and instructors' convenient reference, all active words and expressions are now included in the vocabulary list that accompanies each visually-based vocabulary presentation.
  • The vocabulary and grammar presentations are now followed by a full page of directed ¡A practicar! exercises and a full page of communicative ¡A conversar! activities, resulting in a significant increase in both the number of activities and the variety of their formats.
  • The review of grammar from first-year studies has been strengthened with revised and clarified grammar explanations in the textbook's end matter. Within each chapter, simplified Repaso student sidebars refer students to the grammar points available for review while auto-scoring exercises on the companion web site provide important and convenient practice.
  • The ¡A leer! literary readings are simplified, shortened, and supported by additional glosses. The Después de leer post-reading sections offer increased comprehension questions and a new Expansión "going beyond" the reading activity that helps students interpret the reading or react to it in a personalized way.
  • Extensively revised and reorganized video sections now provide complete support using a process-oriented approach that moves smoothly from pre-viewing, viewing, and post-viewing to "going beyond" the video.
