About

Overview

The Writer's Selections: Shaping Our Lives, 5/e is a thematic reader for beginning writers that focuses on the influences and decisions that shape our lives, including other people, events, cultures, media, work, and technology. Representing a wide range of sources and supported by pre-reading and post-reading activities, the readings are short, readable, and engaging. Writing About the Reading exercises require students to explore different approaches and styles of writing. Journal assignments encourage students to explore their ideas and write about them in a journal format; paragraph-length assignments offer writers the opportunity to explore a focused topic; and essay-length assignments give students experience in narrowing a topic and developing a short essay.

Features and Benefits

  • New! CL WriteSPACE encompasses the interactive online products and services integrated with Cengage Learning writing textbook programs. Students and instructors can access CL WriteSpace content through text-specific Student and Instructor Websites and via Eduspace, Cengage Learning's online Course Management System, and additional course management systems including Blackboard/WebCT.
  • A brief introduction precedes each reading, identifies sources, and establishes a context for the reading. A purpose question or statement has been added to each headnote to focus students' attention and improve retention and recall
  • Reading Strategy sections offer practical advice on how to approach each essay.
  • Vocabulary Preview lists present challenging words students will encounter in each essay. Since students preview the words and their meanings before reading, their comprehension of the essay will be strengthened.
  • Finding Meaning questions guide the students in grasping the literal content of each essay. By answering these questions students either confirm that they understand the key points or need to reread the passage.
  • Creative Activities throughout the text stimulate interest and original thinking by offering light, spontaneous writing assignments that, alternately, may be used as collaborative learning activities.
