About

Overview

The first truly student-oriented text on this subject, INTERNATIONAL POLITICS: POWER AND PURPOSE IN GLOBAL AFFAIRS is a full-length, highly engaging introduction to the study of world politics. Author Paul D’Anieri uses a theme of Power and Purpose to illustrate the tension between those motivated by power and those by purpose. A cohesive pedagogical framework presents the study of international politics as a series of intellectual puzzles and policy problems that help students make the connection between power and purpose, continuity and change, and emerging problems and traditional ones. He also addresses common student deficiencies in history, policy, culture, and geography through case studies of real-world events, and emphasizes that a better understanding of international relations can often be gained by examining problems from multiple approaches.

Features and Benefits

  • Each chapter begins with Learning Objectives and an outline.
  • A case study approach makes the material more applied for students.
  • Connections boxes: “The Historical Connection,” “The Policy Connection,” and “The Geography Connection” all provide context for the students to better understand the chapter topics and to build their ability to think critically.

What's New

  • The theme of “Power & Purpose” is better illustrated in this edition through highlights in the table of contents and chapter wrap-ups titled “Power & Purpose and....”
  • Many instructors cover civil war in their IR courses, but need to supplement their textbooks because there is not a lot of coverage of civil conflict in IR books. 3e will become the first IR book to offer comprehensive coverage of this issue within the conflict chapters, showing how the international community becomes involved in these conflicts and the impact of these conflicts on other states.
  • Chapter 14 will now focus specifically on environmental policy. 3e will apply the paradigms and theories introduced in part II as well as new theories (game theory) in order to make sense of the challenges that the global community faces in this area.
  • Expanded coverage of migration in contexts of both human rights issues and IPE. Other updated content includes coverage of the EU debt crisis and the Arab Spring.
  • Chapter 12 on international organizations is moved in the TOC just after chapter 6. We have expanded coverage of transnational actors (including criminal organizations) so that we provide students an understanding of the new types of players on the international scene prior to covering issues such as conflict and IPE in which these actors are heavily involved.
  • New boxed feature called “International Politics and You,” helping students connect issues in international affairs to their lives.
  • New end of chapter multiple choice and critical thinking questions help students assess their mastery.

“The section on terrorism is the best I’ve read in an intro book--concise and balanced.”

— Clayton Thyne, University of Kentucky

“This chapter provides a very clear discussion of economic concepts and terminology, which is extremely helpful when teaching IPE to students with very little economics background.”

— Vincent A. Auger, Western Illinois University
