EARTH SCIENCE AND THE ENVIRONMENT uses the two themes of earth systems and environmental issues to provide a rich overview of all Earth-related disciplines, including geology, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, and astronomy. Thompson and Turk provide a sense of how Earth functions as a single system composed of interacting subsystems. This commitment to the Earth systems approach is integrated throughout the text and is emphasized graphically in the chapter-ending thematic flow chart, "systems interactions", which illustrates the interconnectivity of the Earth's four spheres (geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere). The text's other main emphasis, environmental issues, is integrated into the text throughout in both the authoritative narrative and stunning multi-part visuals that emphasize the beauty of Earth science. To further enrich the student experience, the new fourth edition is fully integrated, on a concept level and with book-specific interactivities, with the CengageNOW student tutorial system. Web-based, assessment-driven, and completely flexible, the system offers a personalized learning plan based on a diagnostic pre-test to focus students' attention on the concepts they don't yet understand. This superior teaching package, along with a text by an experienced and dedicated author team, provides students with fun, interactive learning opportunities.

Features and Benefits

  • The "earth systems interactions" appears at the end of each chapter. This graphic highlights how a given process interacts with other Earth systems, emphasizing the interconnectivity of the Earth's four spheres (geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere).
  • At least one full-page "systems perspective" image, focusing on how earth processes and systems affect the environment, appears in almost every unit of this new edition. Designed to emphasize the integration between the two primary themes of the text (earth systems and the environment), these full-page art pieces will also appeal to the visual learner.
  • Thompson and Turk devote a full chapter to climate change, placing modern climate change within the context of the broad ebb and flow of climate change over the 4.6 billion years of Earth history. The authors begin the chapter with a review of past climates throughout geologic deep time and then discuss the warming trend of the past 150 years within this broader context.
  • Special topics are highlighted and further discussed in "focus boxes" throughout the text. In a survey course where many subjects are introduced, it can be refreshing for the student to have an option to read in-depth discussion on topics of interest, and "focus on" boxes range from traditional Earth Science topics to current, environmental case studies.
  • The Thompson/Turk author team is unique in combining dedication to earth science education with extensive field expertise. Most of the locations in the text have been experienced first-hand by at least one of the authors. Gray Thompson is a dedicated teacher, researcher, and author, while Jon Turk is a geosciences writer, a chemist, and an adventurer.

What's New

  • Fully updated to reflect the most recent developments in the field, including coverage of Hurricane Katrina, to reinforce the fact that science is a living process and not a set of stale facts to be memorized.
  • Many "Focus On" boxes have been integrated into the narrative, to provide a more cohesive narrative flow and to provide a more relevant experience by consistently fusing process with application.
  • This edition is fully integrated, on a concept level and with book-specific interactivities, with the CengageNOW student tutorial system. Web-based, assessment-driven, and completely flexible, the system offers a personalized learning plan based on a diagnostic pre-test to maximize students' study time by focusing their attention where it is needed most.
  • The art program has been significantly updated, most significantly to the "systems perspective" concept art, to capture students' attention and imagination.
  • The popular "earth systems interactions" flow charts have been redesigned to enhance their usefulness as a review tool.

Author Bio

Graham R. Thompson

Gray Thompson is Professor of Geology at The University of Montana where he teaches Introductory Geology, Mineralogy, Summer Field Mapping, and graduate courses in Clay Mineralogy and Shale Petrology. He has published over 20 research papers in international journals, mostly co-authored with his students. He is also a mountaineer and professional guide with first ascents, many with Jon Turk, of peaks and routes in the Rocky Mountains, Alaska, the Yukon, Baffin Island, the Alps, the Karakoram, and the Himalayas. He has authored many articles published in international climbing magazines and journals, and has been the subject of other articles in these publications. Many of the photographs in his texts were taken by Thompson and Turk on their climbing trips and expeditions over the last eighteen years.

Jon Turk

Jon Turk is a chemist, geoscience writer, and adventurer. He received his Ph.D. in 1971 and later that year co-authored the first environmental science college textbook in the country. In the 32 years since then, Jon has continued his career as a science writer by publishing 23 environmental and geoscience texts. Jon's love of unspoiled environments and his fascination for the wild places on this planet have also led to a distinguished career as an adventurer. He has kayaked around Cape Horn as well as the 3,000 miles between Japan and Alaska, crossed the western Gobi of Mongolia, unsupported, on a mountain bike, and was the first to ascend Lamo-she Peak (6070 meters) in the eastern Himalayas (with co-author Gray Thompson). He has written numerous magazine articles about his expeditions as well as an adventure/travel book, COLD OCEANS: ADVENTURES IN KAYAK, ROWBOAT, AND DOGSLED (HarperCollins, 1998).
