About

Overview

SENDEROS approaches language learning as a student-centered, multi-faceted process that goes beyond the ability to understand, speak, read, and write in Spanish. With SENDEROS, students are encouraged to be active participants, not passive receptors, in the learning process. Throughout each chapter, students are regularly asked to think critically, participate in pair and group work, respond to readings, express their opinions, and thoughtfully consider the views of others. Although the focus of SENDEROS is building oral and written communication skills, the variety of material and activities provided within make it equally appropriate for courses that focus on contemporary culture or grammar review. SENDEROS also works well in "bridge" courses to develop reading strategies before taking upper level literature and civilization classes.

Features and Benefits

  • HIGH-INTEREST CONTEMPORARY TOPICS. All chapters revolve around contemporary and thought-provoking topics. Whether the topic is one that students have discussed in previous Spanish courses or one that they have not explored before, the readings, videos, and activities all encourage students to look at the topic maturely, intellectually, and with a new perspective.
  • ORAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION. Pair and group conversation activities allow students to be consistently engaged with other learners in meaningful exchanges of ideas and perspectives. Each chapter features a composition activity so that students may continue to develop their communication skills through writing.
  • SEMESTER-LONG PORTFOLIO PROJECT. Focused on social interaction, the goals of the portfolio project are to help learners improve their language skills and to make connections with communities of speakers of the target language. This project considers the importance of language learning as a social process as well as a cognitive activity.
  • DOCUMENTARY AND PERSONAL VIDEO CLIPS FROM THE SPANISH SPEAKING WORLD. Every chapter in SENDEROS integrates two videos, a documentary segment and a personal narrative segment, each closely related to the chapter theme. Taken from documentaries and news programs, the docu-footage provides students with diverse real-life, provocative points to ponder for subsequent classroom activities. In the personal narrative footage, native Spanish speakers from various walks of life relate incidents or circumstances in their lives that are thematically related to the chapter topics.
