About

Overview

Charles Hoffer's MUSIC LISTENING TODAY: ADVANTAGE EDITION, 5th Edition is a brief, approachable, modular, and complete course solution that develops students' listening skills, providing them with the framework they need to understand and appreciate different styles, forms, and genres of music. The text includes discussions of dozens of familiar and lesser-known musical selections, all carefully chosen for their "teachability." Students have several options for obtaining recordings of the music covered in the text. A comprehensive, optional set of CourseMate resources--featuring Active Listening Guides for all pieces in the book, music downloads, an interactive eBook, and more--provides students with the tools they need to excel in your course. A 2-CD set covers the selections that you are most likely to use within the classroom, and is included with the print book at no additional charge; an optional 4-CD set completes the set of music selections mentioned in the book. All musical selections are also available online in streaming form and as downloads as part of the optional set of CourseMate resources (separate Sony Music Download Card is required for the 4-CD download option). Other CourseMate tools provide access to a complete, interactive eBook, the Engagement Tracker online instructor gradebook, biographical sketches, musical terms, interactive quizzes, links to related websites, and more.

Features and Benefits

  • Every print copy of this text includes a 2-CD set at no additional cost. The set contains a complete core listening program of 32 selections that are incorporated throughout the text. All music is available in streaming form within the optional CourseMate learning environment.
  • Forty-three concise chapters, each of which can be read in one sitting, provide instructors with the flexibility to tailor the course to suit the needs of a wide variety of students.
  • Margin notes--as many as five or six per page--help to accelerate student comprehension.
  • The book offers coverage of popular music as well as a substantial sample of music from different cultures around the world.
  • Short composer biographies and informational boxes offer cultural and social background that enriches the musical selections.
  • Historical timelines, placed at the beginning of each of the book's eight parts and richly illustrated with period art, enable students to place the chronology of music within its cultural and historical contexts.
  • Listening Guide headings provide the date of the work as well as reminders about such elements as genre, form, medium, and tempo. Listening Guide timings are easy to follow, with track numbers and track-by-track times (as on CD players) immediately adjacent to the commentary. Listening Guide descriptions have been made even easier for students with no musical training.
  • Special charts that describe the features of a period's music appear in the last chapter for each part that covers music history. The charts also summarize the major changes in the elements of music during the period.
  • Glossary terms are boldfaced in the text to underscore their importance while students read and study.
  • Active Listening Guides on the CourseMate learning environment provide visual representations of the progression of each work, all perfectly synchronized with the music. As an arrow moves along the work, musical examples and commentary appear at just the right moment. Replaying any section of the work is as easy as a click of the mouse. Additional tools on CourseMate provide live access to biographical sketches, musical terms, interactive "Practice Listening Quizzes," and links to related websites.
