What's New

  • This edition enhances the emphasis on the themes of the conflict between the values of freedom and order, and between the values of freedom and equality, with a feature in each chapter, “Freedom, Order, or Equality, and
  • A more pronounced emphasis on the theme of the impact of globalization on American politics is accomplished through a new feature in each chapter entitled “
  • The previous edition's “Compared with What?” and “Politics of Global Change” features have been eliminated, with some of the content adapted to fit the style and emphasis of the new feature boxes.
  • Chapter learning outcomes receive greater emphasis, and are more tightly integrated into each chapter to aid student comprehension and preparedness. Major chapter topics are organized around the numbered outcomes. Chapter summaries and review questions are correlated to the outcomes, with one bullet point per outcome in the summary and two questions per learning outcome in the end-of-chapter quiz.
  • This edition has been streamlined to decrease the page count from 704 to 656. In addition, eliminating Chapter 19, “Global Policy,” and redistributing its content to Chapter 12, “The Presidency,” and Chapter 13, “The Bureaucracy,” has reduced the number of chapters from 19 to 18.
  • The thirteenth edition is significantly more affordable than the previous edition.

Efficacy and Outcomes

Reviews

“I started using this book when I was a teaching assistant at the University of Arkansas. What I liked then and still do is that use of a consistent theme-freedom, order, equality-throughout the book. I think that most students tend to think one of those values should always be government's only pursuit. The book makes the students view the other side.”

— Leslie Baker, Mississippi State University

“I like the textbook. I appreciate the work done to incorporate recent judicial developments as well as congressional activity, not to mention the updates on the 2012 election. . . . The chapters on civil liberties and civil rights have always been my favorites. I like the weaving of historical cases with current cases. It is critical that students learn the history as well as current developments.”

— Dr. Elsa Dias, Pikes Peak Community College
