About

Overview

Built on the idea that the right choice is an informed choice, Knox and Schacht's CHOICES IN RELATIONSHIPS equips readers with the knowledge and confidence they need to make wise decisions for a lifetime of positive relationships. By applying the book's concepts and participating in exercises such as self-assessments, readers will learn how to approach every intimate relationship with the freedom and responsibility that accompany their choices. They will be encouraged to explore the tradeoffs involved with choices, learn how to view situations in a positive light, and understand how not making a choice is really a choice after all.

Features and Benefits

  • “What if?” boxes personalize the focus of choices in relationships. Examples include, “What if you have made a commitment to marry someone but feel it is a mistake?” “What if you are in love with two people at the same time?” and “What if an old lover contacts you?”
  • “Self-Assessment” boxes provide scales for students to measure particular aspects of their own outlook and characteristics of their relationship with their partner. These self-assessment boxes, based on empirical data, are a unique feature of this text and are very popular with students.
  • “Applying Social Research” gives students a glimpse into the kinds of research that marriage and family scholars do and the methods they use to do it.
  • “Family Policy” boxes, at least one per chapter, identify social policy issues related to marriage and the family that confront American society. Examples include abstinence-only versus comprehensive sex education in the public school system, marriage education in public schools, and mediation before litigation in divorce proceedings.
  • An enduring popular feature of the text is “Personal Choices,” which are detailed discussions of personal choice dilemmas. Examples include “Who is the best person for you to marry?” “Should I get involved in a long-distance relationship?” and “Deciding to have intercourse in a new relationship.”
  • “Diversity in the United States” segments reveal racial, religious, same-sex, economic, and educational differences in regard to relationship phenomena, while “Diversity in Other Countries” paragraphs reveal courtship, marriage, and family patterns in other societies.
  • National and international data are presented throughout each chapter, reducing student speculation and guessing about marriage and family topics.
  • This edition features two Special Topics: “Highlighting Marriage and Family Careers” and “Contraception.”
