### Overview

Pat McKeague's sixth edition of PREALGEBRA is the book for the modern student like you. Like its predecessors, the sixth edition is clear, concise, and patient in explaining the concepts. This new edition contains hundreds of new and updated examples and applications, a redesign that includes cleaner graphics and images (some from Google Earth) that allow you to see the connection between mathematics and your world. This includes references to contemporary topics like gas prices and some of today's most forward thinking companies like Google.

### Features and Benefits

• Pre-tests are located at the beginning of every chapter. These tests allow students to assess and prepare for the material to be covered in the upcoming chapter; as well as provide instructors, when utilized, information on where their students' proficiencies and deficiencies may lie and plan their course accordingly.
• Chapter openers motivate students to learn the topics in each chapter. Each chapter opener illustrates a real-world application of one of the main chapter topics, and most present the information both graphically and numerically.
• Each section opens with a list of learning objectives situated in the margin. A reference is made when the objective is covered within the section, and in the problem set as well. Instructors will easily be able to tell which exercises reinforce which learning objective, and students will more easily be able to study based on the concept-problem linking.
• "Getting Ready For Class" boxes are found just before each problem set and contain four questions that require written responses from students. Answers for these questions can be found by reading the preceding section. This boxed feature reinforces the importance of reading the section before coming to class.
• "Using Technology" is found throughout the text shows how calculators can be used to enhance learning and help solve problems. These boxes are easily identified and can be highlighted or skipped depending on instructor preference.
• Each problem set contains a variety of problems, including both skills and applications exercises, and great breadth from easy to challenging. In addition to opening skills based problems (paired and graduated), each problem set contains opportunities to hone analytic skills (asking students to practice estimating), provide more relevance ("Applying the Concepts" questions) and improve their quantitative literacy ("Maintaining your Skills" problems). More challenging critical thinking questions called "Extending the Concepts" are found at the end of the section problem sets.
• Each chapter concludes with a summary of the key concepts discussed, review exercises that can be used to study for exams (answers in the back of the book), a cumulative review (applying concepts from all preceding chapters), a chapter test, a group project, and a research project. This extensive collection of review material is invaluable for students as a study tool before quizzes and exams.

## Meet the Author

### Charles P. McKeague

Charles P. "Pat" McKeague earned his B.A. in Mathematics from California State University, Northridge, and his M.S. in Mathematics from Brigham Young University. A well-known author and respected educator, he is a full-time writer and a part-time instructor at Cuesta College. He has published twelve textbooks in mathematics covering a range of topics from basic mathematics to trigonometry. An active member of the mathematics community, Professor McKeague is a popular speaker at regional conferences, including the California Mathematics Council for Community Colleges, the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Texas Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges, the New Mexico Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges, and the National Association for Developmental Education. He is a member of the American Mathematics Association for Two-Year Colleges, the Mathematics Association of America, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the California Mathematics Council for Community Colleges.
