What's New

  • NEW! 4LTR Press Online. Created through a deep investigation of students' challenges and study preferences both broadly and in General Psychology, PSYCH Online enables students to study how and when they want– including on their smartphones! The unique StudyBit and StudyBoard functionality reflects students' natural study habits, allowing them to easily interact and personalize the course material as they collect and organize search-related material and quiz themselves. This low-startup continues on to instructor experience with straightforward assessment management delivered side-by-side with information about what the students do on their own. Both instructors and students can monitor progress through a series of Concept Tracking reports and traditional Gradebook features, ensuring improved engagement, retention, and outcomes.
  • Chapter 5 ("Learning") has dozens of new references and uses the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings to illustrate the intersection of violence in the media and aggression. A new figure of the four basic reinforcement schedules helps students better understand this challenging concept.
  • Students tell us that they value coverage that they can apply in their own lives. Updates along these lines in PSYCH 4: Chapter 8 ("Motivation and Emotion") presents conflicting viewpoints on why we do the things we do and feel the things we feel. In keeping with trends in American culture and advances in psychological research, the sections on obesity and eating disorders have been thoroughly updated and Chapter 11 ("Stress, Health, and Coping") contains updated coverage of the warning signs of stress, the effects of daily hassles, the value of social support when one is under stress, and of the relationships between ethnicity and chronic illnesses.
  • Chapter 12 ("Psychological Disorders") is completely revised and updated for DSM-5. For example, obsessive–compulsive disorders no longer fall within the category of anxiety disorders. Similarly, bipolar disorder and depressive disorders now occupy separate categories. New and updated coverage includes social anxiety disorder, hoarding disorder, depersonalization–derealization disorder, illness anxiety disorder (earlier called hypochondria), and delusional disorder (previously called paranoid schizophrenia).
  • Chapter 13 ("Methods of Therapy") has revised and updated coverage of topics such as the effects of psychotherapy, the effects of therapist factors such as empathy and showing positive regard, and the use of cognitive-behavior therapy with schizophrenia.
