What's New

  • An increased focus on concept based additions: A chapter opening figure that includes an inductive caption and figure captions throughout that promote critical thinking skills and encourage the student to link important concepts.
  • Evidence based research and references which present the most current topics in a cogent yet thorough presentation.
  • Three times the number of case studies/nursing care plans were added to the book by including them in every clinical chapter and appear in one of two formats: nursing care plans and concept maps. Both formats include patient examples where pertinent history, physical assessment data, and laboratory findings emphasize the nursing role in the clinical setting. Both engage the reader by humanizing the material and helping readers continue to develop critical thinking skills. In addition, the case study concept map challenges the learner to create a concept map at the end of the presented case.
  • Outstanding pedagogical features that provide real world applications and additional opportunities to enhance critical thinking abilities.
  • A refined holistic nursing approach which has the nurse as the primary focus, and the importance of collaborative care is stressed.
  • Gerontologic Considerations: This is a new feature that highlights information that applies specifically to the care of the older adult patient.

Efficacy and Outcomes

Reviews

"Nursing Care Plan/Case Scenario – I really like to see these types of teaching/learning strategies included in chapters. It enhances critical thinking and can be utilized during class time to promote class participation and also to help the students with analysis and synthesis of knowledge."

— Michele Gerwick, Indiana University of PA

"I like the use of Case Studies to help the students analyze and synthesize material learned in the chapter. Case studies are a good teaching learning strategy that can be utilized for a classroom activity."

— Michele Gerwick, Indiana University of PA

"The pedagogical features will be a big benefit to students."

— Maureen Brophy, Montana Tech of University of Montana

"I was impressed by the extent of the additional features. This section was complete and shows evidence the materials will assist the student to critically think, reflect and apply the information."

— Susan Spooner-Holland, Northwestern State University

"Better than Ignatavicius – loved them."

— Laureen Ryley, Community College of Philadelphia

"The special features (safety, cultural issues, red flag, dollars and sense, nurse strategies, etc.) take into account the multidimensional nature of man; therefore, it is necessary to prepare the students for a wide-range of situations. Also, I like the information related to research and evidence-based care."

— Sharon Murff, Grambling State University

"There are more unique ones (boxes) in Daniels."

— Margaret Gingrich, Harrisburg Area Community College

"Dollars and Sense [Special Feature] This is an excellent feature to include. Students and new graduate nurses frequently do not understand why some treatments are not utilized based on financial restraints. This gives them a better understanding of the rationale for involving finances in treatment choices."

— Michele Gerwick, Indiana University of PA

"Safety First – This is a great feature. Safety is an area we are seeing more emphasis on in health care. Helps to incorporate that type of thinking in the student nurses before they become professional nurses."

— Michele Gerwick, Indiana University of PA

"Law In Practice Feature: Vital!! Provides excellent and current information to the reader. This will certainly stimulate class discussion!"

— Michele Gerwick, Indiana University of PA

"Yes, these are very appealing and I like the titles. The features address current issues and concepts present in nursing practice. These features will help the student to synthesize the knowledge from the text and also to self reflect on their own experiences in nursing practice. The "Real World, Real Choice" is an excellent idea that follows the conceptual approach of this text in promoting the transition from student to practitioner. "Safety First" feature is a vital concept for today's practicing nurse. Safety/safe practice is also a competency in the current AACN Essentials document."

— Michele Gerwick, Indiana University of PA

"I felt that overall the six chapters that I reviewed provided a strong, comprehensive knowledge base for the student/reader. I really liked the use of the different Special Features and believe that the inclusion of those in the chapters not only provides for opportunities for class discussion, but makes the student think 'outside the box'."

— Michele Gerwick, Indiana University of PA

"I personally like these features. The Fast Forward feature shows that nursing is always evolving and changing. This is something that I stress to my students in regards to being a constant learner. The Dollars and Sense section is pertinent for cost containment as this is vital to healthcare. Real world real choices takes a management prospective. This is important in the concept of manager of care. I had previously discussed EBP (Evidence Based Practice) and find this feature to be necessary in a nursing text. Ethics or Law in Practice feature would also be beneficial to the student. Sometimes they do not realize the various ethical dilemmas or legal issues that can arise in nursing. Ultimately, I feel that the above mentioned features as well as the ones that I did not, would be a positive addition to the text."

— Joan Krug, Mt. Aloysius College

"The special features singled out for increased focus appeal to me because they appear to address the different types of adult learning styles."

— Susan Spooner-Holland, Northwestern State University

"Patient playbook excellent; Red Flag, Fast Forward excellent."

— Mary Ellen Morrissey, Salem State College

"Much better (than LeMone). This is one of the biggest strengths of this textbook."

— Peter Miskin, Samuel Merritt, University – San Mateo

"Dollars and Sense: Awesome! Staff nurses never really have any idea what anything costs, and health care is a business. The better informed the nurses are, the more conscientious they'll be with supplies, and being sure they charge for the things they're supposed to."

— Shellah Young, Southwest Mississippi Community College

"Yes! The information presented in FAST FORWARD is right on target. We (nurses) are aware of many things that are currently being researched, the direction that health care and the delivery system seems to be moving, as well as cutting-edge diagnostics. All the data and research may not be completed, but I think it is a big plus for the students to have this awareness. RESPECTING OUR DIFFERENCES: Incorporating this into Med-Surg keeps me (and the students) from having to pull out the Fundamentals textbook. Also, this is such an ongoing never-get-away-from-it pertinent topic, I am pleased to see this!"

— Shellah Young, Southwest Mississippi Community College

"Patient Playbook Love this tool!!!"

— Rita Ann Laske, Temple University

"Yes, these features are appealing. The "real world, real choice" is something that is sure to generate discussion and critical thought, and the inclusion of the solution and rationale in a companion document is a good choice to deter the temptation to skip ahead for the answers. The inclusion of the ethical (Ethics in Practice) and economics points (Dollars and Sense) is also of interest. The case studies, cultural highlights (Respecting Our differences), and evidence based practice features are all things that I look for as important aspects when selecting a textbook."

— Tammy Haley, University of Pittsburgh – Bradford

"Patient Playbook – another excellent resource for both nurse and patient!"

— Denise Morris, Waynesburg College

"Yes, they have appeal. Loved the Fast Forward, PDA downloads, and Dollars and Sense features. These features are especially relevant to the practice of TODAY'S nursing practice."

— Denise Morris, Waynesburg College

"Patient Playbook Feature—excellent! Provides specific strategies for the student/nurse to implement for the patient with nausea and anorexia during chemotherapy."

— Michele Gerwick, Indiana U. of PA

"The Nursing Strategy Feature Nurse Navigator role is a very interesting concept for the student to learn about. More and more patients are being cared for at home tand this nursing role will help to enhance the patient's and family's understanding of care."

— Michele Gerwick, Indiana U. of PA

"The Special Features (in chapter 46 Burns) were just outstanding! You kept everything relevant and interesting."

— Shellah Young, Southwest Mississippi CC

"The Case Study/Nursing Care Plans are excellent!"

— Shellah Young, Southwest Mississippi C

"Nursing Process in Daniels is up-front; I like the case studies and especially the case studies to concept maps with Key Points/questions. One advantage Daniels has is a case study…in every chapter."

— Barbara Mottola, Atlantic Cape Community College

"I really like the case-based instruction and competency-based education with the focus on specific nursing concepts in Daniels."

— Vivian Austin, Macon State College

"Daniels appears to be more user-friendly. Had more boxes with pertinent "sidebars" of information. More holistic and developed case studies."

— Susan Alix, Worcester State College

— Brian Fasolka, Drexel University

"Organized by nursing process; effective use of boxes/ diagrams; inclusion of pharmacology; Red Flag boxes. Daniels is much easier to read."

— Connie Fiorentino, Bucks County Community College

— Susan Spooner-Holland

— Gary Johnson, Samuel Merritt University – San Mateo

"Stronger focus on evidence-based practice. Greater focus on nurses' professional role."

— Peter Miskin, Samuel Merritt University – San Mateo

"Overall, I was impressed to see a chapter dedicated solely to hypertension. This is unusual yet needed, I believe, due to its prevalence. This was a very well done chapter from which I gained knowledge and motivation."

— Kathleen Kafel, University of Massachusetts – Boston

"Yes, from the review of these materials, the text appears to be well suited for our current course needs. The use of "units" is a desirable way to cluster the materials and the breakdown appears logical. The use of an initial "assessment" chapter in each unit is also viewed as a strength."

— Tammy Haley, University of Pittsburgh – Bradford

"I liked this chapter (chapter 36 Dysfunction of the Spinal Cord and Peripheral Nervous System) very well. I think it presented some very difficult concepts in an easily understood manner. This is typically one of the hardest areas for nursing students to understand. Upper motor neuron and lower motor neuron dysfunction tend to baffle them, as do the various spinal cord injury syndromes. These presentation of these areas was well done in this chapter."

— Saul Jones, Contra Costa College

"There is soooo much content – teaching concepts allows students to learn more globally than learn specifics."

— Patricia McGinley, El Camino College

"It is the perfect example of solving many of the 'problems' with nursing education – thinking outside the box. Sharing resources, working collaboratively are all things of the future. May as well start students learning that way!"

— Nancy Meedzan, Endicott College

"My text (Smeltzer) is a systems approach. The conceptual approach of Daniels is more broad-minded and now I understand the benefits of basing your book in this approach."

— Nancy Meedzan, Endicott College

"It is unique (conceptual approach) because we have to teach caring and how to respond to critical situations. This must be done in a clinical/simulation arena. It also helps us foster critical thinking by using case studies/care plan preparation."

— Christine Bachman, Harrisburg Area Community College

"The Daniels' conceptual approach makes it clear that the patient is the focus of the textbook and that this textbook is developed to assist the nursing student in transitioning into the practitioner role. This is an important approach to take in today's nursing curriculum. Students need practical and applicable knowledge in textbooks. It seems that the Daniel's conceptual approach may be more student-friendly than the Lewis, et al, text. The Lewis text does have a strong pathophysiology base and students often find it difficult to understand some of the concepts presented in the text."

— Michele Gerwick, Indiana University of PA

"Daniels' approach represents a radical departure from a traditional focus on medical diagnoses towards a more conceptual approach with a focus on nursing issues. With more consistent focus on nursing concepts and nurses' professional role, it could potentially revolutionize the way we teach med-surg."

— Peter Miskin, Samuel Merritt University

"Appreciate the drugs grouped by classification in Daniels. This supports how I teach pharmacology and meets a need expressed by students that they didn't feel they got enough pharmacology by drug classification."

— Shellah Young, Southwest Mississippi CC
