What's New

  • UPDATED ART PROGRAM: New figures and photos help convey geologic processes through new examples and images from recent geologic events.
  • UPDATED SECTIONS: Chapter 1's "Doppler Effect" and "Solar Nebula Theory" sections have been rewritten to provide greater clarity to students, and "Global Geologic and Environmental Issues Facing Humankind" was rewritten to capitalize on its inherent relevance and interest to students. Chapter 2's "Introduction" reflects new disasters of 2010-2011 and "Driving Mechanism" includes updated and clarified information and new figures; Chapter 4's section on "Compositional Changes in Magma," Chapter 5's "Introduction" and "Lava Flows;" Chapter 6's Environments of Deposition;" Chapter 8's "Tsunami" now reflects the recent Japanese tsunami and "Earthquake Control" includes new information and processes. Chapter 11's "Can Floods be Controlled and Predicted;" Chapter 13's Deposits of Glaciers," These rewritten sections provide the most up-to-date information available in the field.
  • NEW INFORMATION: Chapter 2 includes a new section, "Features of the Seafloor," which will help tie together information presented earlier in the chapter; and the "Petroleum" section includes information and more explanation to material presented earlier in the chapter. Chapter 6 includes an all-new section on "Soils" and a new "Introduction" to the sedimentary rocks section of the chapter. These new sections provide more in-depth information and provide more explanation. Chapter 8 includes a new "Introduction" which references recent earthquakes in 20110-2011. Chapter 11 includes a new "Introduction" and information on recent floods to provide more relevant examples to aid in students' understanding. Chapter 13 includes a new "Introduction" to better set up the content that follows. Chapter 15 includes a new "Introduction" to reflect the new information about the seafloor and new sections entitled "Seawater, Oceanic Circulation, and Seafloor Sediments" and "Resources from the Oceans."
  • ELIMINATED PREVIOUS EDITION CHAPTER 9: The First Edition's Chapter 9, "The Seafloor," has been eliminated and its content incorporated in part into Chapter 2's coverage of "Plate Tectonics" and into Chapter 15 on "Oceans, Shorelines, and Shoreline Processes." This new division places the information in the most appropriate place for students to fully understand these concepts—and streamlines the number of chapters a professor has to teach in a semester. Additionally, Chapter 15 has been greatly rewritten and reorganized to present information in a more logical and effective manner.
  • Virtual Field Trips in Geology – GEOL2 now comes standard with all 15 trips at no additional cost. The concept-based modules of Virtual Field Trips teach students geology by using famous US locations, including Grand Canyon, Arches, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Parks. Designed to be used as homework assignments or lab work, the modules use a rich array of multimedia to demonstrate concepts. High-definition videos, images, checkpoint questions, quizzes, and Google Earth activities work together in Virtual Field Trips to bring the concepts to life.
