Accessible Format Requests for Students & Instructors with Disabilities Overview

Cengage Learning is committed to meeting the needs of disabled users. Our Accessibility policy describes company-wide services and practices.

Your textbook may already be available for purchase in an accessible format on CengageBrain.

If an accessible text is not available for purchase, a Disability Support Services Officer may request an electronic file of the print materials from Cengage Learning on behalf of a student or instructor. Note: Requests for files must be submitted by the Officer at the institution. Each qualified user must purchase access to the product, or the institution may purchase access for the user.

Accessible eFile Requests

Cengage Learning

Higher Education Schools

Submit requests to the AccessText Network (ATN), a clearinghouse for publishers providing e-files to post-secondary Disability Support Offices within the United States and our territories. Note: ATN membership is required before a request can be submitted. Membership is free. Visit the AccessText Network.

Non-members of ATN may request files via our online permission request form.

K-12 Schools

Visit the National Instructional Materials Access Center (NIMAC) to request alternative materials. Your state coordinator may request files to be converted to a format accessible to your student. If the title is not found, the state coordinator can request that Cengage Learning add it to the NIMAC repository.

If NIMAC does not apply to you, submit a request via Cengage Learning’s online permission request form.

If you are using Adobe Acrobat’s Read Out Loud and the file is reading "blank," consider an alternate free PDF reader like Foxit for Windows PC or Apple Preview for Mac.

Most likely the "Commenting" in Adobe Reader has been enabled. "Commenting" can easily be disabled by choosing "Save a Copy" from the File menu in Acrobat Pro. This will create a new copy of the file without the Commenting restrictions. If you need help, contact the archivist who sent you the files.

If possible, we will request a Word extraction on your behalf. Note: The time required to produce a Word extraction depends on our vendors' capacity. Generally, it requires an additional 15 to 20 business days.

If you are a Premium Member of the AccessText Network, files in your required alternate format may have already been created by another organization. You may request to exchange files via ATN.

ISBNs for a Bundle, Access Code, or Software

  • Bundles: When Cengage Learning receives requests for bundled ISBNs, we do our best to break down the bundle into its individual components. If we are unable to identify the components of a bundle, we will contact you for more information.
  • Access Codes: Though we don’t have alternate versions of our digital products, we might have transcripts or closed-captioned versions of components on those sites. Let us know what is needed or found to be inaccessible, and we will investigate.
  • Software: We don’t offer alternate versions of our digital products, but we can provide technical support on how to access the features that will make the product more accessible. Contact our Accessibility Program Manager for help.

Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Bing web browsers all feature increase/decrease or "zoom" functions for web pages. You'll find these functions in the Settings or Tools within the browser.
